Hello IF Community!
I have been wondering what the difference is between LNAV1 and GPS in the autopilot navigation and I was thinking someone might be able to help me. Could I also know which navigation you recommend?
I think gps is just for navigation, whereas lnav is for GPS and NAV headings as well
LNAV stands for Lateral Navigation, which refers to navigating along a flight path using ground-based navigation aids or waypoints, versus GPS, which is a Global Positioning System that uses satellites to provide precise location data.
Thanks so much! When flying in IF which source do you use?
There is no option for LNAV1 as a source. If you turn on LNAV in your autopilot with the source of GPS, it will follow your flight plan. If you tune to NAV1 or NAV2 as your source, it will follow whatever you have those set to, such as an ILS or a VOR.
What @Anthony_Gulluscio said.
wait so what’s nav 2? I know what nav 1 is, but never knew what nav 2 is
They’re the same function, if you had two back to back VORs per se maybe you can tune one to one and the other to the other so you can have them set and ready. Same reason we have BRG1 and 2
Ah I see. Thank you
If you look in a cockpit, you’ll see something called NAV radios, so IF modeled it as NAV 1 and NAV 2.
Pretty much what others said, relating the acronyms to each other:
LNAV: Manages lateral navigation using external references.
GPS, VOR, NDB: Provide the external location data LNAV uses to navigate.
NAV1 and NAV2: Serve as input points for LNAV, where you can preset navigation frequencies for quick access and switching.
or you can use adfs
Thanks so much!
No problem!
NAV2 can by set as a backup option ( in real world too) sometimes I set a different RWY or different airport as NAV2. When I need to divert ( out of different reasons ) by GO AROUND procedure i can quickly change to 2nd airport by selecting NAV2 ( previously set ) and then I have some time to prepare correct and safe approach path.
