Lining up with runway

When lining up with the runway(when I am in the air), I either have to turn left or right to line up. I often line up to soon. When should I be aligned with the runway, when, and how? How do I know the heading of the runway, if I’m using APPR or AP?

Just failed approach from KSAN to KLAX.

Helpful for knowing the heading of the runway. But when do I turn to the heading?

When you capture the localizer. In other words, when the line below the compass on the the HUD moves in from the edge to the center. Turn gradually so the line ends up in the middle. It will take some practice.
