Line up and wait ATC message

I have a few doubts about ATC.

When the ATC says line up and wait runway ###, does that mean wait outside the runway, or taxi on the runway and wait for clearance?

Hello,

When we say to Line Up and Wait, we ask you, the pilot, to enter the runway and wait to takeoff.

Hope that clears everything up!

Thank you!
I wasn’t sure if they meant wait outside the runway or line up on the runway

FYI, “Hold short” is the instruction to wait outside the runway :)

And when holding short, its wise to ensure the nose of the aircraft does not cross the holding line. Ive seen plenty that are way over the line even the nose wheel are over the line.
🙄💩
That would consider a violation for encroaching the active runway!
But that’s an another topic to debate another time.

A command to cross a runway is very different to line up and wait on runway.
It just means to enter and vacate as safely in a timing manner as possible when crossing an active runway.

Hey! I have a question, not saying this happened but what would happen if the said pilot entered the runway but didn’t mean to? What would happen then? Just a quick question

Hello,

If a pilot is instructed to hold short by IFATC but enters the runway without permission, most of the time (if the situation permits) IFATC will issue a warning to the pilot that says something along the lines of “(Callsign) you were not instructed to enter the runway, please exit the runway”.

Keep in mind though, the above warning is only seen as curtesy from IFATC and a warning is not required. Sometimes, IFATC don’t have the time to warn especially if there is traffic on short final to the runway, therefore this would result in a level 3 violation for entering the runway without permission.

Hope this clears things up. Have a good one!
