LGA Park Visual

Flying into KLGA today, and real-world is using the Park Visual Rwy31. I found a reference chart online that uses waypoints and altitudes. So I went to manually input the waypoints, and noticed that the waypoints GACAR and SHAYY are reversed on the map.

Here’s the official chart for the approach:

Here’s a reference chart with waypoints and altitudes:

Is it worth trying to get the waypoints swapped? It’s just as easy to just swap them when entering them in the FPL.

I’ve noticed this issue too when flying the approach, just enter them the other way around in the game. The simulator has an outdated navigation database, and this has been a well known issue.

Got it, I was confused for a second when entering them until I just noticed they were swapped. Should have PMd you for all things LGA 😂

Act, though I’m a New Yorker I live by jfk, not lga- I’m sure @Delta174J would be a better help with LaGuardia stuff lol

Hey! The thing with this visual is it’s worth only echoing completely visual and using the cues on the chart such as the park, queens museum, and stadium.

I just find it helpful to have the waypoints in to fly between to keep me on course as I turn. The visual cues are pretty hard to spot on IF.

This is my pet peeve when flying into LGA, normally because whenever I do it’s when the park visual is being used

Both the RNAV X-Ray 31 Approach and Park Visual 31 are in use today, most aircraft on RNAV X-Ray.

Expressway Visual approach was replaced with Park Visual 31. Park Visual 31 is a bit wider.

Visual approaches are typically flown using visual landmarks but many companies require you to back up visual approaches with an instrument approach to validate you’re in the right place, lined up with the correct runway, etc.

I’ve flown the expressway visual approach irl and I’m glad they have the new Park Visual 31 and RNAV X-Ray 31. The runway comes up on you quickly flying the Expressway Visual 31, the wider approach gives you a bit more time to ensure you’re stabilized coming out of the turn on short final.

Thanks for the clarification! I tried to fly it this AM but NY Approach brought me way out for the ILS approach to Rwy 31. The approach to Rwy 4 goes right into the departure path for JFK so they didn’t want the interference.

IRL it looks like they just turn the JFK departures before any interference occurs.

Speaking of this approach it’s being used IRL! Also, gotta love how the planes are making one smooth continuous turn

Then spirit 🤣🤣

No doubt! I’m sure they are using the RNAV-X Rwy 31 that @W0X0F mentioned above and is in the “Park Visual” chart I shared in the OP.

If you look at that Spirit plane, you can see each Nav point, looks like they left LNAV on until short final!

JFK is using 31L for departures.

The standard departure profile for 31L is a left turn to CRI VOR/DME (Canarsie) followed by radar vectors to initial assigned route/fix:

When the 13’s are in use, Parkway Visual 13L or a GPS (RNAV) approach is used where you follow the Belt Parkway from CRI into a right turn for 13L with lead-in lighting for the visual at night.

Approaches at EWR/LGA/JFK are heavily reliant on approach radar vectors to connect you from your incoming STAR to your filed approach. Departure are likewise reliant on vectors to your initial fix.

N90/NYC airspace can certainly get interesting at times :)

I can imagine! That amount of traffic to that many airports 😳
