Landing tips

I’m fairly new to IF and I am currently practicing landing manually. I know that I can use APPR to land, but as I said I want to be able to fully land manually. If there is anyone who can help me and give me some tips on how to land better and have more control over my final then that would be very helpful.

Hey there, welcome! First off I would recommend making sure your approach is stabilized, meaning that you have the proper descent rate, airspeed, and aircraft configuration adjusted for the conditions. The most important part of manually flying a landing is the flare, and controlling your speed through touchdown. A good way to get the hang of this is to start off below the glideslope on final approach and flare the nose very aggressively to get the hang of “floating” just before touchdown. Keep in mind every aircraft behaves differently and one might require more flare input than the other, and don’t forget to set the power to idle as you flare. Simultaneously you should be watching your airspeed and keeping it +/-5 kts of the ideal landing speed, and lastly if runway conditions allow, I would recommend keeping the nose up once the main gear touches down so you can utilize aerodynamic braking, and get that full butter effect. What I do is have APPR set up until around 500 feet. At this point I make sure everything is calibrated for landing then I recalibrate the position of my phone. At this point just let the plane glide down and dont try to over control the aircraft

Practice is what really helps! Get comfortable landing one aircraft, then move on to another. All planes are not created equal - I find the Dash 8 a lot harder to land than the 737, for example. Personally, I think the A220 is a great starter aircraft. It’s forgiving, powerful, and the physics are fairly new. To get a lot of reps in, you can use Solo mode and repeatedly jump to short final.

Another great tip is utilize the trim settings and always calibrate your yoke before takeoffs and before disengaging auto pilot settings for landings. I personally never use APPR because once you disengage one auto pilot setting it disengage auto pilot all together. So I always set up my vnav approaches.

For the far out waypoint near the beginning ILS cones on the maps I set to 3,000ft then I set my runway way point at the airports Altitude. For places like Denver you will need to round to the nearest thousand and add 3,000ft to the Altitude for the beginning of the approach.

During the approach phase you want to be completely manual by the time GPW calls “one thousand” so before I disengage any auto pilot setting I get into a steady position and recalibrate the yoke. After that I disengage LNAV and VNAV. Then i set my NAV1 to the ILS. Then I disable HDG and make slight adjustments to center my aircraft with the green localizer. After that I disable the ALT which also disables VS.

By this point I already have my gear down and I am configured for landing. Then while maintaining aircraft stability I start applying rudder to keep the floating dot known as the FPV centered on my screen while keeping the dot at the runway end. After that I start getting a feel of the throttle to maintain landing speed.

As the GPW starts calling out “50, 40, 30, 20, 10” I start lowering my throttle not all the way but just enough that speed lowers enough for me to flare without going back up. Then once the main gear touches the ground I don’t lower throttle until the nose gear touches. After the nose touches then I start reverse thrusting by pulling the throttle all the way down to a ground taxi speed. although the guide doesn’t teach you how to land, you’ll eventually make your way to the Expert Server, so you’ll need to be familiar with all of these procedures and guidelines

most importantly, though, pick an airport and an aircraft, then practice as much as you can

To sum it up in short. Since you are less experienced with managing airspeed and descent rate 100% manually, use LNAV during landing until minimums.

Use autopilot for now for landing / approaches as it is easier to use than APPR (sounds false but it’s true). Enter the cone or the red/grey area of an approach no faster than 190 kts and no higher than 3000 ft AGL. always use a standard ILS or RNAV approach for now.

One last thing is to never descend greater than -1000 fpm. This won’t be an issue if you ender the cone at or under 3000 ft AGL.
