Joystick gameplay

Hi ! I need advice about the handflying with a joystick on IF. I have some difficulty to keep a stable vertical path during multiple face of flight. For example, during the takeoff it’s a bit hard for me to keep the 15 degrees of pitch (with trim working) without an over pitching of the aircraft or a lost of AOA by the plane when I put my joystick on neutral position. If you guys have some advice for me please.

Nb: right after the takeoff I have to turn on the AP (ALT only) to keep a good trajectory. That’s annoying.

Hi Jay,

First of all, what type of Joystick do you use? I use the Thrustmaster one but haven’t come across this problem. Perhaps try resetting/re-programming your controls like you would have done setting up your joystick for the first time.
How much trim would you typically use on takeoff to counteract the pitch up?
Sounds like you need MCAS, haha.
Otherwise practising pitching down slightly will get you the hang of it, but I can understand if that’s annoying.

I use an old Logitech joystick. But the main issue is to find the right balance between the trim, the actual speed and the pitch. And regarding to the trim, that depends of what type of aircraft I’m flying on. How calibrates is your joystick ?

Hello Jay! So use a Thrustmaster Hotas X, which ngl is pretty bad, but here is some tips for everyone else too:

  1. Don’t over correct. If you think you are not pitching enough, only adjust by a little bit, or you would risk tail striking or stalling.
  2. Use trim, a lot. You would need to adjust the trim based a a few things like wind speed & direction, weight, and aircraft. Many aircraft have a good range of trims for takeoff: around 20% or the load divided by 2.5-3
  3. Familiarity. Make sure you know the aircraft before you fly, by gathering the muscle memory, you can fly without hiccups. You can stick to one aircraft type, to make it easier and a little more realistic.
  4. Experiment. You should create a perfect ratio of trim and sensitivity in your joystick, and make sure it does not have stick drift.
  5. Small inputs. Similar to the first, small inputs are what you probably should aim for, like look at an a330 cockpit landing, they barely move the joystick much. And before you say: “But they are experts!”, remember that you have control over the joystick, you can change thing about the joystick to your preference.
