Going to start up some ATC ops again. Probably will apply to IFATC soon but need to get a few more operations, review the manuals, and get some Training Server ATC feel again as it has been awhile. So come and help me out!
Transition altitude was incorrect. Jets fly patterns at 1500ft AGL, which was 1985ft at KDAL. Add 1000ft to achieve minimum separation and round up to get 3000ft.
Good job realizing you needed a pattern entry when I called inbound after the transition. However, you already cleared me for a touch and go, meaning I can land, do a low approach, a touch and go, or a stop and go. Clearing me to land was unnecessary.
On the runway change, you got the pattern entry correct! There was no need to tell me to disregard that message when it was right.
The runway exit command was good, as I was at 60kts GS and a direction was not needed as there were exits on either side of the runway.
The main things to remember are to give a pattern entry, sequence, and clearance in that order every time for pattern work. For aircraft remaining in the pattern, a new entry is only required on a runway change. If you have any additional questions you can PM me here or in the IPP Slack!
Thought I needed to sequence you before I gave you another pattern entry so I said that to give you a number in the sequence but then I remembered that I donāt need to because youāre the only aircraft.
Hey Joseph! You did pretty well. There were a few things that I noticed though.
You could have told me to enter left downwind for 13L when I requested a runway change and not told me to disregard. I was already starting my turn to join the traffic pattern, but you then told me to turn back to right downwind, leading to a violent turn to the right.
On my clearance after the runway change, I did not receive a pattern direction with my clearance, so I wouldnāt have known which direction to fly after my pattern. After a runway change, this must happen.
When I reported full stop, thereās no need to clear me again. The option clears me for:
Touch and Go
Stop and Go
Full stop/Landing.
Roger is all you need there. No extra clearances are needed.
Good Job Joseph! I hope to see you succeed as an ATC member :)
Everything was beautiful except for a few little things!
Hereās my feedback for you:
When Silkair 888 (@Anthony_Morgan) requested takeoff initially, āline up and waitā should have been used instead of āhold shortā, as the aircraft ahead was already rolling and taking off.
When me and Silkair 888 requested runway change together, you could have done one of two things.
Either:
a) Extend either of us upwind, and let the other one enter the opposite pattern first, then call crosswind/pattern entry for the extended aircraft; or
b) Entered us into the same patterns (me for left downwind 13R, Silkair 888 for right downwind 13L), then āiāll call your baseā either one of us to prevent conflict on the base turn.
I think there were 2 (or more?) times that I heard pilots request frequency change after taking off and departing. At that time, they were both outside of your airspace already, which is a little late.
When Southwest 737 called inbound, instead of issuing ācontinue inboundā, you should have issued them a pattern entry and sequence, then clearance.
For all inbounds, as a minimum, always issue a pattern entry then sequence if necessary and clearance if there is no radar controller present.
You initially failed to notice that Silkair 888 was lined up for the wrong runway, but you caught it well by issuing the go around. Well done!
Generally everything else was beautiful!
Thank you for controlling and thank you for your time :)
This definitely threw me for a loop. So much that I actually gave both of you the wrong downwind directions. Initially I was going to give you the opposite of what I actually gave you, my mind blanked on that part haha!
Thank you very much for popping in! Thanks for your time as well!
I have to commend the great job today. On top of @MarkONE feedback, I only have small observation:
At 1700Z, you notice the Southwest passed hold short line and remind him. Good job on that. Also, I just knew the hold short line at KDAL is really far. I myself crossed the hold short line behind him haha sorry for that.
