I will be there in a A318, callsign FFT731.

Personally, I don’t like TS1, very busy at times and I prefer flying alone.

That is a very low cruising altitude for the journey.

It is a short flight…

About 40 miles. I usually climb to about 7,000 for that trip.

I’m going to hold 5,000ft.

I always climb to FL380, my normal cruising altitude.

You must have fear of heights!

No but it’s a short journey and 10-11 minute flight so I don’t go to high

I understand that, but that seems a little low. A rule that many pilots is is the “3:1” rule which states for every three miles you should descend about 1,000 feet, which at 160 kias is about 1100 feet per minute. If you were to only climb to 2,000, using the 3:1 rule you would start your descent about 2 minutes before landing, a little late. Say, if you were to start your descent 6 minutes before landing, you could climb to almost 7,000 feet, and still descend with plenty of time, also saying you fly as slow at 160kias at 7,000.

To find the best cruise height I used to divide the total distance by 7 however I now use 8 instead, as this gives a more realistic climb, cruise and descent profile. Max height Fl320-Fl420 depending on total overall distance, weight of aircraft etc!!!

40 / 8 = 5 = 5,000 ft
