Hey, thanks for controlling :)

Here’s your feedback:

  • you don’t need to say make right traffic/left traffic all the time, if there’s no other traffic. Just let the pilot decide if he wants to go left or right traffic. Don’t be surprised when someone who was previously left traffic is going right traffic afterwards or viceversa. I’d recommend to say make left/right traffic though when using both RWYs. :)

Apart from that little thing it was quite good. Keep practicing and I’m sure you’ll get it ;)

I think you may have gotten confused. The pilot goes the same way in terms of traffic unless told other wise. When the pilot requests takeoff, remaining in the pattern you must give left or right traffic. If they remain in the pattern, there is no need to state - “after the option make left/right traffic”. You should ,however, use this when an aircraft is inbound, from somewhere else or they have just had a runway change. I don’t think the pilot should be changing which traffic side they are using on their own at least

I don’t think so, when you don’t say make left/right traffic you give the pilot the freedom to enter the downwind he wants.

But that isn’t an option when clearing for takeoff, after the pilot has requested remaining in the pattern - you have to give a direction or refuse pattern work (this is from memory, so I could be wrong). Either way, the pilot definently shouldn’t be just changing the direction on their own accord, whilst in controlled airspace at least.

I was fairy certain it was implied you go the same way as cleared each time. Not exactly up to date on controlling though

Sure you say, cleared for takeoff, make left traffic at any time.

It’s about if it’s the pilot’s choice to enter the DW he wants, or if he should stick with the Downwind assigned at the very first time.

I was told by many that the pilots may change, if ATC doesn’t always assign a DW, and that it is “overcontrolling” to always say make left/right traffic.

You should continue your pattern direction previously used. I always recommend responding with “Go around left or right traffic” or simply issuing an entry to the downwind with the applicable sequence. :)

Edit: can’t tell what the argument is anymore, but no you don’t need to say “after the option make left/right traffic” for every approach, as the pilot should continue that direction until further advised. Only time I use “after the option make…” is on the first approach and anytime you want to change their direction.

So as a pilot you’re not allowed to switch the Downwind after the option, even if ATC doesn’t assign left/right traffic after the option?

No, you’re not allowed to switch. If cleared for the option and instructed to make left traffic on the go you should continue left traffic patterns until further advised.

That may be something we can look at as a pilot request down the road.

Good work, I’m not to sure though if you should be clearing people to land when they haven’t even requested to land, someone might want to confirm that. Apart from that good job.

Good job out there, sorry for crashing when doing patterns a few times there I was laying down in my bed playing

But overall 9.5/10 ATC work (sometimes cleared me for the option a little early)
