Infinite Flight Radio (IFR) Station Idea

Hi all,

I’m putting out some early feelers for a project I’ve been thinking about for a while: a 24/7 community-run radio service for Infinite Flight players. This would be completely unofficial, just a fun creative endeavour for anyone who wants to be involved.

:satellite_antenna: What Is It?

The idea is to use Discord’s Voice Channel features to run a round-the-clock stream. Most of the time this would be music, and thanks to a full PRS licence on my end, we can legally broadcast pretty much anything without copyright worries.

But I’d also love this to be more than just a playlist on loop.

:studio_microphone: Shows, Interviews & Community Content

We could build a proper weekly schedule made up of different programmes, each with their own presenters (solo or teams) and producers where needed. Everything would be voluntary and arranged around people’s availability.

Possible programme ideas include:

  • Music hours (chill cruise tunes, region spotlights, airline themes, etc.)

  • Controller or IFATC interviews — especially around events

  • “Behind the scenes” ATC segments

  • Community chat shows and Q&As

  • Event previews, countdowns and post-event debriefs

  • Tip hours for new pilots

  • Request or themed music shows

  • Short features such as aviation trivia or fun facts

This is just a starting point — there’s plenty of room for creativity.

:control_knobs: Live & Pre-Recorded Options

Not everything has to be live. In fact, a good mix will make the station easier to run and more diverse. People could submit:

  • Pre-recorded programmes

  • Podcasts or episodic series

  • Short inserts and features

  • Special segments prepared ahead of time

This makes participation possible for anyone, regardless of time zone or schedule.

:tada: Special Events & Marathons

On holidays, anniversaries, or major community events, we could run special programming such as:

  • Themed weekends

  • Holiday marathons

  • Charity broadcasts (where appropriate)

  • Event-day takeovers

All optional, all community-driven.

:busts_in_silhouette: Looking for Interested People

To explore this idea further, I’d love to hear from anyone who might want to:

  • Present a show

  • Produce or edit audio

  • Help with scheduling or programming

  • Suggest ideas or concepts

  • Just be part of something fun and creative

You don’t need radio experience — enthusiasm is enough!

:memo: Final Notes

This is purely an interest check. Nothing is set in stone yet. If enough people are keen, we can move to planning, testing, and shaping the station as a team.

If this sparks your interest or you have suggestions, drop a reply below!

Sounds great would definitely be interested

If you want to, you can put this in Features, so you can get actual votes, and have this put into the game, if you have enough and once they have time. I think this would be a pretty cool idea, and another reason for non-pro users to get pro for dc access.

I would do were it an official thing but there’s so many hurdles the team would have to jump through

What a beautiful idea! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

(Although as I’m an introvert lol, I’d be one your station’s loyal listeners )

Interesting idea. I’m possibly interested in producing. I’m a — very new — sound engineer, just finished studying audio/music production. Actually looking for a career in sound for media production, so this would be great.

One feature it should have is ATC ducking. When ATC is active, the radio will lower in volume (if you are playing radio with ATC or Centre active) to allow you to hear what ATC is going to tell you or ask of you

What you can do, Is get together a group of people, and create a third party app or discord server for that. I think that would be a great option.

I must stress, this is a proposed addition to the IF Discord server  Great to see some initial interest

I don’t think that’s possaudio when ATC speaks. in the app but on a third party platform, so there’s no way to duck in app audio.

Seems interesting. It sounds like a cool idea for something like Spotify or YouTube

I do have a small idea if you’d like. It would kinda be like a community ran newspaper!

Hey! I actually really enjoyed reading this. Some great ideas! However…

Unfortunately we will not be able to allow this in the official Infinite Flight discord server due to the very possible breach of copyright rules, Discords ToS & moderation concerns.

That said please don’t let this discourage the idea completely. I’m sure there are alternatives to running something like this, whether that’s in a separate unofficial server or on other streaming platforms!

sometimes I really hate that copyright is a thing, it’s keeping great ideas like this one from becoming a reality.

That is only fair, and you’re quite right to express concerns.

That being said, as was stated in the original proposal, I am fully licensed to play out copyrighted music, and it would be my liability as the station host, not Infinite Flight’s.

It would be no different than someone streaming music in a VC on any existing server, and in fact Discord does permit radio station transmission - I wouldn’t have proposed this without having done my homework, I assure you!

As for moderation, that’s where my experience as a radio producer comes in; all programming would be checked and verified before transmission, and if anyone hears anything on-air that is a problem, we’d address it immediately.

Afaik a PRS licence is for the UK and not global usage, thus meaning it would definitely breach copyright rules & ToS. Unless you have additional worldwide licensing, a PRS doesn’t allow discord broadcasts

Discord is:

  • A close invite-only platform - to add to this, our server requires a pro-subscription, so the full server is hidden behind a paywall
  • A platform with international distribution
  • A platform that isn’t at all classified as a broadcasting venue for a specific region / not a public radio station
  • not an open commercial streaming service
  • not explicitly a online music service / platform

In other words, it’s illegal to stream copyrighted material on Discord with just a PRS. This is why it’s tricky to get nice music into Discord (annoyingly), even though you say you’ll be fully liable as the station host for any copyright infringements, the content would still be streamed under our brand in our server, so it would be a shared liability.

I’m really sorry that I can’t have any better news for you on this  I just don’t think it’s something we can allow in the Official Discord server.

Alright, you win. I’m sure there’s some other way of approaching it but for now, close this for me, would you?
