Laura’s given us another update with the memory issues delaying 25.2.

Status of the Open Beta

Here’s an update from this morning. Philippe got the mipmaps working and we’re now loading the lower resolution textures for other planes, resulting in 2x+ memory savings like we had in 25.1. [image]

^ This statement is saying that the memory savings are equal to what we have currently.

This ultimately means that the memory issue is almost if not fully solved, and open beta is right around the corner.

Looks like Laura gave another update on the status of 25.2 / Open Beta!

The priority now is fixing perf issues + a couple of low hanging fruits, which we’re making good progress on, then we’ll ship Open Beta and tweak the remaining issues as we go.

I’ve added this to the main topic under the first question.

Laura also gave a very interesting development on fog, which was sparked by questions surrounding her latest screenshot below -

Oh and to clarify whether this was fog or clouds. The fog you see is clouds with high density. We don’t have a separated fog and cloud technique at this time. They both use the same.

We technically have the capability to render 3 layers:

• Fog
• Mid layer
• Cirrus

Mid layer was punted for this initial release of the renderer because we just want to ship it and focus on that later.

Cirrus clouds work well but for the fog, we need to tweak a bit more, and that’s going to be done during the open beta. The couple of remaining issues with the fog are:

• Rendering Artifacts
• It’s too “patchy”, which looks nice for some cases, but not for when the fog layer is solid.
