Hey y’all, here is a suggestion of mine and I would like your opinion.
I have noticed when I am controlling approach or center, and I give someone a heading to turn to, I always wish that the autopilots would turn sharper than 20 degrees. This would increase the rate of turn so they arrive to the assigned heading faster than normal. Now, being a pilot in real life, I understand that a steep turn at higher altitudes when cruising at faster air speeds is not realistic, or safe. So here is my 2 cents. Keep the standard 20 degree autopilot bank angle above 10,000ft. Below 10,000ft, automatically switch to the increased the bank angle of 25 degrees to allow Approach controllers to vector aircraft tighter and closer to the airport to increase flow rates into an airport. Any objections? Thanks!
I don’t really think this is necessary. Keep it real 🙂
Also just vector them earlier… idk because I am not a controller but you could just do that.
This is a real thing in airplanes. However, this seems to be a duplicate…
I think this is clearly a good idea because when I’m doing my routes as I like to make a flight plan a lot and I always find it’s hard to reach the line correctly at the correct time but that’s also because of the reduced bank angle. I would strongly suggest that this becomes a feature in infinyes flight.😊
Yes, but that’s talking about a bank selector. I’m talking about the autopilot defaulting to a steeper bank angle to be more realistic and help out ATC.
I get your point and would like to have that change you’ve proposed implemented as well, but the main problem I have experienced during approach controlling is rather the delayed pilot’s response to our commands. Often they don’t react immediately but only once the command can be heard (which can be up to 10-20 seconds after sending in busy times). If they would start the turn once they receive it (yellow blinking symbol), it would be better for us controllers. When I fly in an approach controlled airspace with auto pilot and turn immediately after having seen the command, I was never too late and always got the intercept perfectly 😎
I like this idea, I hope LNAV does not only bank a little bit.
Yes that’s very true. I don’t think we can fix the delay in response time tho lol that’s what I’m trying to fix by increasing bank angle below 10,000 feet.
I don’t know if it’s just me, but in some planes I swear they have more of a bank angle than others
It’s just you. They all have the same i believe
Just turn autopilot off and bank 90 degrees like I do ;)
I should also point out I definitely have more takeoffs than I do landings
Why would you do that? It defies all logical sense. The 25 degree bank angle refers to the Standard Rate Turn. The turn and slip indicator on light aircraft shows 25 degrees, and heavier aircraft have it pre-programmed.
The SRT is there for a reason. When in a SRT, you turn 3 degrees per second. Then both pilots as well as ATC can expect where the plane will turn and how fast. You don’t want people turning at 35 degrees, while others turn at 10 degrees, do you? Then you loose all sense and purpose of vectoring in the first place.
If you cannot properly vector aircraft when they are turning by the SRT, then well – you’re not doing your job.
