Inbound Maintain x mile separation command question/request

Posting here as I can’t post in Features…

Would be nice for Tower to be able to command something like “Maintain 3/4/5 nm separation with aircraft ahead” (similar to the approach speed command options).

Any thoughts on this?

Hey there!

Just FYI, General is not to be used as a substitute for Features - if you can’t post there then :man_shrugging:.

Personally I think the speed commands do enough of a job. Plus its ultimately ATC’s job to ensure proper separation is maintained.

hey would like to mention that yes, it’s the job of the ATC to ensure separation, but its also the job of pilots to maintain a safe distance visually this is also practiced in the real world, plus pilots also have a map. So its not just the ATC its ultimately for the both.

I don’t see a difference in ATC responsibilities between an approach speed command and a maintain separation command. In either case ATC has to monitor and manage separation.

The distinction is that ‘approach speed’ ignores the plane ahead and ‘maintain separation’ requires pilot attention to the plane ahead. Perhaps it’s not included because its not in IRL, and I respect that.

This will just create a backlog in the sequence. When an aircraft slows down for landing, we get the accordion effect and we’ll end up with a guy going 150kts 25nm away.

Approach speeds are more effective, consistent and easier to manage.

I think we can add an instructions like maintain visual separation with aircraft ahead. This being used IRL. But it’s similar to the adjust speed follow aircraft ahead
