Hello everyone. I am competing in the Quality of Life Competition and need an issue that is currently bothering people and their lives. Because of my passion for aviation, I would like to have my assignment based off of aviation. The problem is that it needs to be implementable. I had an existing topic where I was analyzing Noise Pollution and it’s detrimental effects on the population surrounding JFK Airport, however, the solution would be to add insulation and/or talk to airport staff and airline staff (which I cannot do for obvious reasons). So, does anybody have any ideas? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Most of what they would say would probably not be implementable. The assignment calls for me to implement something and record the data before the implementation and after. Thanks for the suggestion though!
I presume noise abatement studies are already out there for current state, as well as most likely white papers regarding possibly…abating…more…(not great phrasing, I know).
Yes, there are papers about this already; how I can implement this is the problem. If only I had 5 billion dollars…maybe I’ll ask @Tyler_Shelton for some $$$ ;)
My recommendation is Do Not Use A Topic With Zero Evidence. It’ a disaster waiting to happen. If you can find a few refutable articles (actual databases, aviation experts, etc.), then you can do the pollution/sound thing. If you can’t find anything, you should probably do something else. Just my $0.02
Thanks for the recommendation! There are quite a few articles I have found about this matter, but as a personal backup, I will be visiting 5-6 neighborhoods around JFK Airport with a decibel meter to measure the sound pollution being emitted by incoming aircraft.

Refer to reliable sources (most of the reputed news companies, and Wikipedia provided there is a citation from a well known website next to the sentence)
Make a draft or two before making the actual paper
Use studies referring to various places and comparisions (eg. Effect of sound in Mumbai Airport’s neighbouring areas compared to Abu Dhabi Airport’s neighbouring areas which are comparatively further from AUH, comparisons between older and newer airplanes in terms of sound) etc.

I just started writing my 1st draft of the report; I have a question to ask. Which approach path at JFK affects the most people in terms of noise pollution? I’m guessing the 22L/R approach as the aircraft never leave land.
Understanding you’re passionate about aviation and you’d like to use that in the competition, it’s affect on our quality on life isn’t as bad as other things.
May I suggest you make your assignment about cellular devices and how they’re becoming more of an entertainment device than a communication device that is slowly dividing personal time for fitness and education.
But if you truly want to make the assignment about aviation it’s best you do the study yourself than base it on studies already made in terms of measuring decimals near the airport…
The teacher may like this more than just reciting somebody else’s study/work.
Why can’t you do this? You’d also contact the airport authority that is most likely not collocated at the airport.
I wrote a paper not to long ago on noise pollution due to aviation, KMIA has an entire office just for this.
Look around the airport info and I bet you would be able to find a number. Give them a call, they won’t mind to chat with you for a little bit and answer questions and give you some ideas pertaining to what they suggest someone does or what they are looking at implementing
