IFATC: How do you guys do it?

Just got done with a 1hr stint at JFK, staffed both tower and ground on TS. It was pretty stressful for a new guy like me, and I just wonder how you IFATC guys do it so efficiently, especially with all these events where there’s like 300+ arrivals? Doing this really makes me appreciate the work you guys do, so hats of to all of you!

On a side note, my apologies to @delta_aviation17, a whole bunch of circumstances really put you through hell when you were trying to depart.

  • Clear communication with other controllers is key.
  • Proper training for new controllers is essential.
  • Have a good understanding of your tools to control efficiently.
  • Know the airport you’re managing (watching FR24 sometimes can help)
  • And, of course, the report button that forces everyone to follow your instructions! :joy:

i mean People are having a good time on TS learning new things, which makes our job easier when they reach the ES requirements. But in your case, you’re controlling on TS with pilots who haven’t had a single second with ATC and have no idea what they’re doing

have a good time on TS too and learn ATC things

A cool head is crucial when it’s busy. It’s important not to get stressed over multiple aircraft messaging you at once. Just deal with them one at a time in a methodical manner.

As Benny said above. Nothing happens quickly and it isn’t your fault that the airport is busy.

Just take your time and don’t get overwhelmed by orange flashes. You (shouldn’t) get brand new controllers on the busy airports, everyone works their way up steadily.

Plus, the key to IFATC is teamwork. We will often split Ground and Tower to one controller for each when busy. Sometimes, you may even see Ground being split too and have multiple frequencies open.

Hope we see you on the team soon!

Bro being a specialist is easy
On a perfect day the only thing us specialists have to worry abt is the gap between departing and arriving traffic

But radar guys have it so much more difficult since the amount of traffic they vector aircraft to a airport is disproportionate

Like bruh IF TNCM gets the entire per day traffic of IRL TNCM in one hour if it’s featured

Respect dudes:saluting_face::saluting_face::saluting_face:

But it would be nice if ppl were just patient and followed instructions

Like bro on the day VTBS was featured i was running GTS and this dude with callsign “Turkish 150” just pushed and taxied on his own and almost ran into another acft

You would not understand my temptation to just report him instead of issuing the Follow Instructions 1&2 like we’re supposed

I would’ve just issued the vio since he posed an imminent risk to other aircraft from what you described

:raised_hands:t5::raised_hands:t5::raised_hands:t5::raised_hands:t5: I haven’t been able to find one for outside of the United States, but this FAA Digital ATIS has it written out. There’s a drop down menu to choose one, but essentially just replace KDTW with a major airport. I think they just added PANC and PHNL too.

I usually don’t like reporting until the last second so I just issued an follow instructions 1 and he started listening

And when I spoke abt this in the discussion channel Walter pointed me out to a message sent by one of our moderators

Apparently the only time we can issue an immediate violation is when these four situations

  • Taxiing through others
  • Flying through others
  • Entering a runway without permission resulting in potential loss of separation
  • Excessive speed that results in the loss of separation (fighter aircraft & >350kts)

For all others we should use Follow Instructions 1 & 2
