As part of the “IFATC at Home” theme for this Sunday, IFATC controllers from the East Coast have come together to present “East Coast Madness”! For 2 hours Sunday afternoon, 9 airports will be fully staffed by 14 controllers and offering countless routes with complete ATC coverage. From some of the largest airports in the world to some of the smallest regionals, there is a flight for everyone to choose from.

KJFK - John F. Kennedy Intl. Airport

John F. Kennedy International Airport is an international airport in New York, USA, and the primary international airport serving New York City. The airport is the busiest international airport gateway into North America, the 21st-busiest airport in the world, the sixth-busiest airport in the United States, and the busiest airport in New York, JFK handled just over 61 million passengers in 2018 and more than ninety airlines operate from the airport, with nonstop or direct flights to destinations into all inhabited continents except Australia.

LaGuardia Airport is an airport in Queens, New York. The airport is the third busiest airport in New York City and the twentieth busiest in the United States. A perimeter rule prohibits nonstop flights to or from points beyond 1,500 miles (2,400 km), but exceptions to the perimeter rule are flights on Saturdays and flights to Denver. LaGuardia has four terminals (A, B, C, and D) connected by buses and walkways. LGA serves 13 airlines and moved 31 million passengers in 2019.

KBUF - Buffalo Niagara International Airport

Buffalo Niagara International Airport is in Cheektowaga, New York. The airport serves Buffalo, New York, United States, and the southern Golden Horseshoe region of Ontario, Canada. It is the third-busiest airport in the state of New York and the busiest outside of the New York City metropolitan area. It is about 11 mi east of Downtown Buffalo and 60 mi southeast of Toronto. Buffalo Municipal Airport (as it was then known) opened in 1926 on former farmland, making it one of the country’s oldest public airports. The original airport included a small terminal building, one hangar, and four cinder runways, each 3,000 feet long by 100 feet wide. Passenger and mail service began in December 1927, with service to Cleveland.

KBDL - Bradley Intl. Airport

Bradley International Airport is a civil/military airport in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. It is Connecticut’s busiest commercial airport and the second-busiest airport in New England after Boston’s Logan International Airport, with about 6.4 million passengers in 2017. The four largest carriers at Bradley International Airport are Southwest, Delta, JetBlue, and American. As a dual-use military facility with the U.S. Air Force, the airport is home to the 103d Airlift Wing (103 AW) of the Connecticut Air National Guard. In 2017 Bradley was the 53rd-busiest airport in the United States. Bradley was originally branded as the “Gateway to New England” and is home to the New England Air Museum.

KDCA - Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is an airport in Arlington, Virginia, located adjacent to the border of Washington, D.C. There is a 1,250 mile (2,010 km) perimeter rule at DCA to send coast-to-coast and overseas traffic to the larger Washington Dulles International Airport, although there are 40 slot exemptions to this rule. Planes are required to fly complicated SIDs and STARs to avoid restricted and prohibited airspace above sensitive landmarks, government buildings, and military installations in and around Washington, D.C, and to comply with some of the tightest noise restrictions in the country. Reagan National currently serves 98 nonstop destinations and is a hub for American Airlines. The airport served 23.5 million passengers in 2018.

KIAD - Dulles Intl. Airport

Washington Dulles International Airport is an international airport in the eastern United States, located in Loudoun and Fairfax counties in Virginia, 26 miles (42 km) west of downtown Washington, D.C. Dulles is one of the three major airports in the larger Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area with more than 24 million passengers a year. Dulles has the most international passenger traffic of any airport in the Mid-Atlantic outside the New York metropolitan area, including approximately 90% of the international passenger traffic in the Baltimore–Washington region. On a typical day, more than 60,000 passengers pass through Dulles to and from more than 125 destinations around the world. Dulles is a hub for United Airlines.

Wilmington Airport an airport located in unincorporated New Castle County, Delaware near Wilmington, Delaware. It is five miles (8 km) south of Wilmington and about 30 miles (50 km) from Philadelphia. Federal Aviation Administration records say the airport had 642 passenger boardings in the calendar year 2011 and 1,064 passenger boardings in 2012. Thanks to the inauguration of service by Frontier Airlines, 2013 boardings increased to 52,456, although Frontier ceased its Delaware service in 2015. Frontier will resume service in May 2020. During four periods since 1990, Delaware has been the only U.S. state without any scheduled airline flights: from 1993 through 1998, again from 2000 to 2006, from April 2008 until June 30, 2013, and since April 2015.

Philadelphia International Airport is the primary airport serving Philadelphia. The airport serves 31.7 million passengers annually, making it the 20th busiest airport in the United States. In 2019, PHL served 33,018,886 passengers, the most in the airport’s history. The airport is located 7 miles from the city’s downtown area and has 25 airlines that offer nearly 500 daily departures to more than 130 destinations worldwide. It is the fifth-largest hub for American Airlines, and also serves as its primary Northeast hub and European gateway. Additionally, the airport is a regional cargo hub for UPS Airlines and a focus city for the ultra low-cost airline Frontier Airlines.

KMIA - Miami International Airport

Miami International Airport is the primary airport serving the Miami area, Florida, United States, with over 1,000 daily flights to 167 domestic and international destinations, and one of three airports serving this area. The airport is in an unincorporated area in Miami-Dade County, 8 miles (13 km) northwest of Downtown Miami, in metropolitan Miami, adjacent to the cities of Miami and Miami Springs, and the village of Virginia Gardens. It is South Florida’s main airport for long-haul international flights and a hub for the Southeastern United States, with passenger and cargo flights to cities throughout the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Western Asia, as well as cargo flights to East Asia.
