My idea is that the ground tower can be able to give taxiing clearance to specific parking stands, or just random. BUT, it can be done by the pilot not requesting a specific gate, just pressing “request taxi to parking”. Because when you get “taxi to parking, at your discretion” clearance, it’s not that realistic. I think that this could add way more realism to the game.
I hope I was able to explain myself, just an idea…
While it’s a “should” and not a “must”, in practice most Ground controllers rarely ever assign pilots specific gates if they did not request for one. It’s frowned upon internally. Many pilots would rather choose their own gate and taxi routes, hence why they request “taxi to parking”.
To stay ahead of the aircraft throughout the entire flight, I research in advance which terminal or apron the airline uses at the destination airport and select a suitable gate for the aircraft myself, rather than relying on a ground controller to assign one. This information is particularly useful at international airports where a distinction is made between domestic and international terminals, as it helps narrow down the options in advance.
For example, let’s take a flight from Houston to Los Angeles operated by an American Eagle E175. After landing, you can confidently head for the terminal used for American Eagle regional flights, known as Eagle’s Nest. If the preferred gate is occupied upon arrival, you already have alternative gates within the same terminal or apron in mind. This way, you are well prepared to react quickly and efficiently after landing and maintain control of the situation.
Yeah I do a quick search on either flightaware for the irl flight I’m recreating, or ask AI which terminal it arrived at, or even check some IFC “guides to airports.” All 3 give an answer of the terminal or even appropriate concourse, and most of the time, the exact gate of arrival is shown on flightaware.
