Iberia, Spain’s flag carrier, currently operates an all-Airbus fleet, among which are 21 Airbus A350-900s with a further two on order. These aircraft were ordered as replacements for the airline’s long-haul workhorse, the A340-600, whichnwas dependable but increasingly costly to operate with rising fuel costs. The big quad jets soldiered on, however, on Iberia’s longest routes and on ones to “hot and high” destinations, such as Bogóta, where the thrust of four Rolls-Royce Trent turbofans was beneficial. Eventually, the A340s had to bow out, and the A350 stepped into its shoes. Among the routes Iberia uses the A350 on is the one between Los Angeles and Madrid.
