I got a new camera...and it's insane @ KROC

HELLO COMMUNITY!

Yup, I bought a new camera. I wasn’t quite settled with the 24 MP on the α7iii so I decided to step up a notch and got 61 MP. Turns out, that comes with some quite significant liabilities with regards to the types of front element filters you can use, but after having 5 days of panic and 2 unfortunate spotting sessions I have gotten it sorted (thanks @callaa for helping me figure it out). This camera outputs images that are 9,500 pixels on the long edge, something that I have been absolutely loving as it gives a ton of cropping flexibility. It was a beautiful day with tons of great light and contrast. Let’s look at the photos!

Gear: Sony α7R IV + Sony 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS

American Eagle CRJ-700(ER) [N524AE] → Washington DC [KDCA]

United Express ERJ-175(LR) [N86350] → Washington DC [KIAD]

Delta Airlines A320-200 [N324US] → Atlanta [KATL]

United Airlines A319-100 [N851UA] → Chicago [KORD]

No, not 1/2 the MP. 1/2 MP. 500 thousand pixels.

Do you recommend this camera to someone who has been shooting for 3-5 years?

Thanks!

That depends entirely on a lot of things, if you give me more info I can better help out.

  • What camera setup do you currently run?
  • What kind of shots do you like?
  • How’s your editing software/computer storage?
  • What do you normally shoot?
  • How often do you shoot?
  • How much are you willing to spend?

I would say that for most people the a7R4 is a bit overkill. It’s a highly specialized camera, so if you don’t need its specialization just save money and get something else. I would only buy it if there’s something in its spec sheet that really jumps out at you. If you’re just looking for a camera to use you can go a lot cheaper than this.

Thanks! This was at KROC (unless you meant an exact spot?)

decent starter cameras tbh especially if you get them for free from the parentals

Indeed, from my grandfather. Unfortunately I don’t live in walking or biking distance of ANY airports, a drive would cost too much for planespotting 😅. Im right next to an airlift helipad but it feels insensitive to be taking pictures of airlift helicopters that are picking up patients.

I feel you, if your family goes on trips see if you can make a little time. That’s normally what I do - when we go somewhere I ask for like 1-2 hours of some morning or afternoon to be cleared for spotting (often, there are other things in the area for your family to do).

Why do I think this’d actually go hard…?

Seriously though. Impeccable shots as always, Andrew! Love the work!

I’ll take your old setup…

Thanks! Maybe I should try to find one in my house lol, I’m sure my parents got one somewhere.

Well, a7iiis are SUPER cheap right now (many examples hovering around 1000). I’m personally waiting for the market to come back up a little bit before selling, it’s cyclical-ish.
