Once you discover hyperspace spotting you can never go back. Welcome to lots of crying and looking for low light performance.

  • Get a full frame (preferably mirrorless)
  • Mode 2 Image Stabilization (panning on the 100-400)
  • Get a full frame (preferably mirrorless)
  • 1/20 - 1/10 is a good blend between feasibility and looks
  • Get a full frame (preferably mirrorless)
  • Do not severely underexpose to lower ISO and rely on DR to recover, once you lose detail it’s over
  • Get a full frame (preferably mirrorless)
  • Lightroom AI Denoise is your friend
  • Get a full frame (preferably mirrorless)
  • Do not try to “follow” the plane, instead predict where the plane will be and rotate to that position using your torso not your arms. If you try to follow the plane you will fall behind it and then move quickly to realign which causes blur. Obviously use your eyes a little bit though.
  • Get a full frame (preferably mirrorless)
  • Always get there before sundown and practice some mid-difficulty pans like 1/30 or 1/25. Helps get the muscle memory into you.
  • Get a full frame (preferably mirrorless)
  • Don’t be afraid to play around with shots that put emphasis on the lights rather than the plane. Use rule of thirds to your advantage for this and leave the majority of the space in front of the plane.
  • Get a full frame (preferably mirrorless)
  • Side-on is the easiest time to pan, sit on the shutter during then.
  • Get a full frame (preferably mirrorless)
  • See if a tripod is right for you. I personally go handheld but I know some people have better results mounted up.
  • Get a full frame (preferably mirrorless)
  • Did I mention getting a full frame (preferably mirrorless)

Can I legally like this message or nah

Your 4 options in this budget low light space are the a7iii, the EOS R8, the Z6, and the Z6ii. The Z6 slots below 1000 used (well below actually) which is a fantastic deal. The other three are all around 1000-1100. The Z6ii I think is the best all-around, the Canon is a bit more pedestrian but still modern and the Sony is just a wicked sensor and AF system put into a box (it’s pretty bad to use). If you go Canon you are essentially forced to adapt an EF lens or use the subpar RF 100-400 5.6-8 (yes, 8) which is going to be pretty bad at night. The Nikon also doesn’t have too many lens options for cheap (just a singular third party Tamron 70-300 right now). The Sony is getting pretty old so that might be a turn off for your but it’s got the best lens availability with multiple cheap options (off the top of my head, the same Tamron 70-300 as the Nikon, the 70-350G, Sigma 100-400 DN, Tamron 150-500)

The Canon setup is going to be about $1600 (but again, f8 on the lens is horrible for night), the Nikons will be $1300 and $1600, and the Sony will be somewhere between $1600 and $2000 depending on what lens you go with.

I can never planespot at night. I put my ISO up high and photos are grainy. I set a low shutter speed and my photos become blurry because I suck at panning lol.

Kind of just happens on crop sensor to be honest. If you have a higher end one with a fast lens you can kind of get away with it but don’t be too hard on yourself.

I have a 6D somewhere but i want an A7iii or an R5II

Those are two very different price ranges lol
