How to use the Infinite Flight Community

Hello everyone, the old topic seemed a bit messy in terms of content. Therefore I tried to organise it a tad more. The purpose of this post, if someone isn’t aware, is to educate new and old users about the functions of discourse. Without any further delay, let’s start!

image

Image 1.

  1. Quote

  2. Strong / Bold

  3. Italics

  4. Hyperlink

  5. Blockquote

  6. Preformatted text

  7. Upload Image

  8. Bulleted List

  9. Numbered list

  10. Insert date / time

  11. Includes:

    a) Hide Details
    b) Blur Spoiler
    c) Build Poll

Quote

When replying to someone else’s post, you can press the quote icon (See image 1, 1.) and their entire post will appear in your reply.

Strong / Bold

If you would like your text to be bold, you have 3 options.

  1. Press the B (See image 1, 2.) and add your text inside the asterisks
  2. Before start writing add two asterisks in front and two at the end of your text.
  3. Before start writing add <strong> and in the end </strong>

Example 1

**Hello**

Result

Hello

Example 2

<strong>Good morning!</strong>

Result

Good morning!

Italics

If you would like the letters to lean to the right, you have 2 options.

  1. Press the icon I (See image 1, 3.). The following format should appear: *emphasized text*. Then add your text inside the two asterisks.

  2. You can do the same thing manually by adding one asterisk in the beginning and one in the end of it.

  3. Before beginning writing down your text, put a _ at the beginning and a _ at the end

Example 1

*I love discourse*

Result

I love discourse

Example 2

_Paris_

Result

Paris

Hyperlink

If you would like your text to be clickable and work as a link, all you have to do is press the small icon located next to the I icon (See image 1, 4.). Once you do so, the following will appear:

In the first box, you paste the link, while in the second post you enter the optional text. Of course, you can do it manually by following the format below:

[Optional Title](Paste URL here)

Example

[Magic Link](https://infiniteflight.com/timeline)

Result

Magic Link

One cool feature of this function is that, if you don’t have a URL and you want to redirect someone to a topic that has been created in the Infinite Flight Community, all you have to do is search for that topic. Then, it will automatically appear in the first box. All you have to do is just click it and you are set!

Blockquote

In order to create a blockquote, press the icon located on the right of the hyperlink icon (See image 1, 5.). You can also add a > before of the sentence you want to blockquote.

Example

> This is a blockquote

Result

This a blockquote

Blockquotes can also be nested as shown below:

Hello!

To have the above result, just add as many > as you want.

Example

>>>> Text

Result

Tex

Blockquotes can contain multiple paragraphs. Add a > on the blank lines between the paragraphs.

Example

> Dorothy followed her through many of the beautiful rooms in her castle.
>
> The Witch bade her clean the pots and kettles and sweep the floor and keep the fire fed with wood.

Result

Dorothy followed her through many of the beautiful rooms in her castle.

The Witch bade her clean the pots and kettles and sweep the floor and keep the fire fed with wood.

Preformatted Text

This feature allows you to display exactly every character as it was typed. To do that, press the icon located next to the blockquote icon (See image 1, 6.) and add your text inside the backticks. You can also manually do that by adding a backtick in front of the text and one at the end or by living some space in front of the text, as shown below

Example 1

(4 spaces) Text

Result

**Text**

Example 2

`Text`

Result

Text

Upload Image

If you would like to upload an image, all you have to do is press the image icon (See image 1, 7.). Once you do so, the following will appear:

Image Uploading

Choose a picture from your device and press upload. You have also the ability to link the image.

You can also change the size of the picture. Let’s say an image has the following size:

![Image Uploading|**460x280**](upload://7eRtKTEhzPtV42LGlAVS5hWORg5.png)

You can make it smaller by dividing the numbers with 2:

![Image Uploading|**230x140**](upload://7eRtKTEhzPtV42LGlAVS5hWORg5.png)

There isn’t any standard rule for that though.

You can also change the size of the picture by adding a , xxx%

Example - %

![Image Uploading|**460x280, 30%**](upload://7eRtKTEhzPtV42LGlAVS5hWORg5.png)

Result

Image Uploading

  • Bulleted List
  • Numbered List
  • Asterisks (*)
  • Plus (+)
  • Hyphens (-)

To create a bulleted list, you can press the “bullet list” icon (See image 1, 8.). Then add your text after the asterisk. You should always leave space though.

Example

* Alpha
* Bravo

Result

  • Alpha
  • Bravo

To create a numbered list, all you have to do is press the “numbered list” icon (See image 1, 9.) and your text after the number. Don’t forget to leave space.

Example

1. Alpha
2. Bravo

Result

  1. Alpha
  2. Bravo

Example with +

+ One
+ Two

Result

  • One
  • Two

Example with -

- One

</li>
<li>Fourth item</li>
</ul>

Result

  • First item
  • Second item
  • Third item
    • Indented item
    • Indented item
  • Fourth item

To add another element in a list while preserving the continuity of the list, indent the element four spaces or one tab, as shown in the following examples.

Paragraph Example

* This is the first list item.
* Here's the second list item.

I need to add another paragraph below the second list item.

* And here's the third list item.

Result

  • This is the first list item.

  • Here’s the second list item.

I need to add another paragraph below the second list item.

  • And here’s the third list item.

Blockquote Example

* This is the first list item.
* Here's the second list item.

    > A blockquote would look great below the second list item.

* And here's the third list item.

Result

  • This is the first list item.
  • Here’s the second list item.

A blockquote would look great below the second list item.

  • And here’s the third list item.

Insert date / time

Here is a thorough tutorial on how to insert date and time in your post. Thank you @Balloonchaser!

Hide Details

This feature allows you to hide information. To hide them, simply press the ⚙ icon (See image 1, 11. [a]) and select Hide Details.

Hide Details

Example

[details="Open me"] Hi! [/details]

Result

Open me

Hi!

Blur Spoiler

Blur Spoiler allows you to hide information, so users can only see what is written, only if they tap the blurred text. To add blurred text, press the ⚙ icon (See image 1, 11. [b]) and select Blur Spoiler.

Blur Spoiler

Then, add your text.

Example

[spoiler]This text will be blurred[/spoiler]

Result

Build Poll

Here is a wonderful tutorial on how to build polls. Something that is not mentioned in the topic linked above is the chart type. You have the ability to choose between Bar and Pie.

Example - Pie

Poll

Thank you @AviatorAlex and @AviatorNikola for voting

More functions of discourse

Horizontal Rule

Aka page break. This feature allows you to separate text with a line. To make that line appear, there are four options:

  • Use 3 or more asterisks (*)
  • Use 3 or more underscores, also known as underdashes (_)
  • Use 3 or more dashes (-)
  • Use <hr>

Example - (*) / (_) / (-) / (<hr>)

___
***
---
<hr>

Result

Another cool option to separate text is the following:

Example - “>”

>

Result

Text Alignment

You have the ability to align the text right or center

Centered Text

To get a centered text, simply use <div align=center> Text `

Example

<div align=center>

This is a centered text

</div>

Example

This is a centered text

Text - right

To get a text alligned , simply use <div align=right> Text </div>

Example

<div align=right>

Thanks

</div>

Example

Thanks

You are advised to leave some space between the div format (As shown above) otherwise, there is a possibility this function not to work.

Headings

If you want to make your text bigger and bold, you have many options that give different results.

  • For large heading add one # in front of the text
  • Smaller than the previous one add 2 # in front of the text
  • Even smaller, but still big add 3 # in front of the text

If you put more than 3 #, the text will appear just bold.

Example - Large Heading / Smaller one / Even smaller one

# Community

## Community

### Community

Community

Non-link Headings

To make a non-link header, you will have to use HTML heading tags (h1, h2, h3).

Example - Non - link Header

<h1> Hello! </h1>

Result

Hello!

You can also use a heading tag while having a word work as a link:

Example

<h2> <a href="ifvarb.com">IFVARB</a> website</h2>

Result

IFVARB website

Large / Small Normal Text

To make the text just big or small, without being bold, add <big> for bigger text or <small> for smaller text

Example - Big / Small text

<big> Big text

<small> Small Text

Results

Big text

Small Text

You should always close the above commands otherwise, everything will be either Big or Small. To close them, add either </big> or </small> at the end of the text you want to appear big or small.

For ultra small text, use the following format:

<small><small><small><small>example</small></small></small></small>

Example

<small><small><small><small>Hello!</small></small></small></small>

Result

example

Text Surrounded By A Box

To get something like that: Example all you have to do is add <kbd> at the front and </kbd> at the end.
If you’d like the text surrounded by a box to make it header, simply follow the advice for creating headers. Always add space between the # and <kbd>

Example - Text surrounded by a box + header

# <kbd> Header

Result

Header

Table

Something that is been used very often is the table. To create a table, use the following format:

| (Option 1) | (Option 2) | (Option 3) |
|---|---|---|
| Column 1 | Column 2 | Column 3 |

Instead of |---|---|---|, you can also use:

|:--| or |:-:| or |--:|

You can continue adding options and columns.

Example

|Trust Level|Votes| Option 3| Option 4|
|---|---|---|---|
|TL0|0 Votes|-|-|
|TL1|5 Votes|-|-|
|TL2|10 Votes|-|-|
|TL3|15 Votes|-|-|

Result

Trust Level Votes Option 3 Option 4
TL0 0 Votes - -
TL1 5 Votes - -
TL2 10 Votes - -
TL3 15 Votes - -

You can align text in the columns to the left, right, or center by adding a colon ( : ) to the left, right, or on both side of the hyphens within the header row.

Example

| Syntax | Description | Test Text |
| :--- | :----: | ---: |
| Header | Title | Here's this |
| Paragraph | Text | And more |

Result

Syntax Description Test Text
Header Title Here’s this
Paragraph Text And more

Blue Text

You don’t have the ability to change the colour of the letters, but there is a trick. You can make the text blue, like the text which works as a link, but with the only difference, there will be no link. 😦

To do that, simply use the following format and your text where it says Text:

[Text]()

Example

[**Blue Text**]()

Result

Blue Text

Text Underliner

To underline the text, use [u] at the beginning and [/u] at the end.

Example

[u]Text[/u]

Result

Text

Strikethrough

If you want every letter to have a dash in the middle, use <strike> at the beginning and </strike> at the end. You can also use two ~ in front and two ~ in the end.

Example - <strike>

<strike>Alpha</strike>

Result

Alpha

Example - ~

~Alpha~

Result

Alpha

Red Text

Use <del> at the beginning and </del> at the end.

Example

<del>Text</del>

Result

Text

Green Text

Use <ins> at the beginning and </ins> at the end.

Example

<ins>Text</ins>

Result

Text

Image Link

If you would like your image to work as a link, follow the format below:

[paste image here](paste link here)

Example

[![Click me|269x187](upload://wWKXru21f7mDKmtec4euL34ZyhE.jpeg)](https://community.infiniteflight.com/t/infinite-flight-faq/288495)

2. Find the following code block on line 21:

        <html>
          <head>
            <title>Test</title>
          </head>

3. Update the title to match the name of your website.

Result

      <head>
        <title>Test</title>
      </head>

  3. Update the title to match the name of your website.

Heading IDs

Heading IDs allow you to link directly to heading on your page/topic. An example of this can be found here.

Example of Heading

<h3 id='heading--link-to-me-custom'>My Great Heading</h3>

Result

Example of Link

[Heading IDs](#heading--link-to-me-custom)

Result

Definition List

To create a definition list, use the following HTML structure.

Example

<dl>
  <dt>First Term</dt>
<dd>This is the definition of the first term.</dd>
  <dt>Second Term</dt>
<dd>This is one definition of the second term. </dd>
<dd>This is another definition of the second term.</dd>
</dl>

Result

First Term
This is the definition of the first term.
Second Term
This is one definition of the second term.
This is another definition of the second term.

Superscript and Subscipt

To insert a superscript format within your text, wrap the text you want to appear superscripted in tags. You’ll end up with something like this.

Example (Superscript)

Trademarks should be written in superscriptTM.

Result

Trademarks should be written in superscriptTM.

If you know how to superscript, you should know how to subscript. Just use ‘ tags ’ so you get text like this.

Example (Subscript)

Sometimes, citations are written in subscript.

Result

Sometimes, citations are written in subscript.

Line Breaks

Example

You can create line breaks by adding <br> into each line you’d like empty!

Hello, my name is Luca!
<br>
<br>
<br>
P.S. My forum tag is lucaviness.

Result

Hello, my name is Luca!

P.S. My forum tag is lucaviness.

Highlited Text

Ever wanted to highlight your text? Discourse new feature allows you to highlight anything you want using the format below:

Example

<mark>This is important</mark>

Result

This is important

Or just use the Louis guide, find a vaguely interesting article, make it funny, make fun of Texans and bam

I hate to be a negative Nancy but the fact the red numbers aren’t all on the same level hurts my soul. Otherwise nice topic!

Let me see what I can do about that…😏

Well, at least it’s way better looking and more comprehensive than the old topic. It was showing its age.

I’m a bit worried if you can’t type a sentence with 10 characters. 😂

We usually used this on Guess the Aircraft topics, until the mods “banned” us from doing it

Of course there is a way to do that. But, it is not allowed in public topics :)
