Wind barbs are graphical symbols used on weather maps to indicate wind speed and direction at specific locations. They are widely used in meteorology, aviation, and other fields where understanding wind conditions.
How to read a wind barb π¨
1. Wind direction:
- The stem (long line) of the wind barb points in the direction the wind is coming from.
- For example, if the stem points north, the wind is blowing from the north to the south.
2. Wind Speed:
- Each barb or flag has a specific value:
- Short barb: 5 knots
- Long barb: 10 knots
- Triangle: 50 knots
- The total wind speed is the sum of these values.
- Calm winds are represented by a circle
Note: Wind barbs in Infinite Flight are colour coded.
Example
Let us read this wind barb:
- One short barb: 5 kts
- 3 long barbs: 30 kts
So 30+5 kts= 35 kts
