Can we land with Autopilot or manually.
Manual or approach mode yep 👍

It’s good to start out with the autoland feature on aircraft just to see how you standard landing would go. A few tips for what to pay attention for in APPR
- With full flaps, don’t let your angle of attack go above 5 degrees
- Enter the cone at 3000agl, make you have correctly intercepted the localizer, and then tap APPR
- Use rudder to keep yourself centerline once you touch down
Once you feel ready to try manual landings, start out with the red boxes landing assist so you know if you are too high or too low. A few tips - Again, try to enter the cone at 3000agl
- Aim for below -300ft per min as a good landing
- Practice will definitely help. Get into the habit of practicing approaches and landings.
You will want to always make manual landings because once you are comfortable with them, they are much more safe, and fun! The only time you should be using APPR is if there is low visibility.
A few more tips - Always remember to calibrate before disengagement of the VS and heading
- Take advantage of trim
- Use your good judgement. You can almost always go around, and no one will judge you. When someone declares a go around, I actually gain respect for the pilot because they are putting the safety of the aircraft and passengers before being on time.
Good luck!
I definitely can agree with you on #7 @Jack_Q I long haul flight all the time but back then I never really cared about recalibrating and thought it should only be like a one time thing you should do before you fly but nope once I turned off AP when I was on Final I had the thing so high in sensitivity it would cause me to pitch up and stall and caused my 7,000 mile journey to end with a crash
@KyleDepra we’ve all had that happen to use. Just fly as much as you can, learn from your mistakes, and you will grow as a pilot. That’s how I am where I am now. Almost 2 years of my pro sub, and here I am now. A grade 5 pilot with over 3000 flight hours and almost 1000 landings. We will all get up here someday. All it takes is determination.
I’m at 1.5 mill xp😂
Hey mate,
If your new at landings then I suggest that you go to a major airport and do use the APPR to land making sure you stay at a reasonable speed. Take note of your vertical speed and alignment with the runway, upon landing notice the flare pitch and then use your thrust reverser a instead of brakes (this will require to disengage the brakes). After doing this I recommend doing a few thousand landings (either on live or solo so you can start on final) until you get really good at it. I would say that a pilot is confident that landing when they are able to land better than the APPR can.
Great! I’m starting now :)
If new to flying on IF, I would recommend learning to fly basics in smaller aircraft such as one of the GAs or maybe the B737-700. Find an out of the way airport and practice your bumps and circuits before flying anything bigger and heavier in a busy location. It will really make a difference to your flying skills.
I learned to land in the Q400 which does not have approach mode. Some of the advice above is to learn to land using APPR - honestly that doesn’t need skill except controlling the speed. I advocate learning manual landings. I seldom use APPR and if I do it’s usually for people doing radar training and even then it’s just to establish on the localiser. Once I’ve got the centreline I go to full manual. It’s much more fun to land manually.
A320 is also a good starter aircraft
