Missed opportunity to have DeerCrusher do the video as he is a CL35 pilot.

Oh well - can’t have everything.

Great video Tyler - thanks!

Turning off APU after take-off and turning on APU before landing is something new to me. What is the reason for that?

It was definitely new to me too! It makes for a very busy few moments at 400ft AAL as you are retracting the gear, flaps, reducing power, and turning off the APU… while usually starting a turn.

@DeerCrusher can probably answer the why! He said they typically turn on the APU when cleared to land by ATC or when announcing inbound on the CTAF.

Yeah, definitely something I have to get used to as what I know of, it is more “normal” to turn off APU after both engines are on.

The APU pressurizes the cabin and allows the engines to produce as much power as possible. With the APU off, cabin pressurization is pulled from bleed air which is pulled from off the engine.

We achieve the greatest engine power with the APU running at one of the key moments in an aircraft operation, the takeoff. Hope this helps!

Thank you for this well-explained information! One more question, does this have any effect on the CL35 in the sim if the APU is on or not?

It does not. It’s purely for realism since I know our community loves realism. Thought giving that little IRL perspective would be appreciated. But if you want to takeoff with the APU off no one and nothing is stopping you. 😜

On the first and second flights I did with the CL35 the APU was turned off on the take off, but I will definitely try to have it on for the sake of realism, but it will be something that I have to get used to.
