I have been playing the game for almost 8-9 months and many times, I see some aircraft in holding patterns.
I tried to search how to do that but never found it.
Someone in the community said, it can be done if assigned by ATC but I was told to hold a few times but I never got anything like that.
(I mean here that when I open their flight plan, I can see “Hold 7-8” and some kind of nomenclature like that.
Yesterday I saw the same thing again and thought people here would probably know something about it.
It looks like this is not a holding pattern, but rather, they forgot to return to their device to land. Often, when this happens, you are too fast to be able to fly all of the arrival waypoints, which causes autopilot to circle back around to try and go to the waypoint.
Holding patterns are less circle-shaped and more oval-shaped. Holding patterns can usually be found in arrival charts, and the radial of the hold will be given, which gives you the heading to perform the hold. Usually, holds are done with 1-minute legs, which means after each minute, you turn 180 degrees left/right.
Here’s an example of a hold in an arrival chart. For this hold, it is on the 049º radial, right turns, and at BOTON.
Anything I said above may be incorrect, I try to answer to the best of my ability.
Okay thank you
K do know about the holding patterns you saud about,
But the doubt for me raised when the flp has shown the hold things (i forgot to take a scrn shot)
This is it perhaps.
ATC can give hold for spacing nd to reduce down the workload
That green there is not really a holding pattern. Basically, someone is likely away from their device or sleeping and doesn’t have LNAV on. The plane overshot a waypoint, and Lnav is trying to reach that waypoint, which is why it does the circles.
(if I am wrong please correct me )
Hey there!
This is part of a customised flight plan using IF-FlightPlan Tools FPL Editor - found here. All you need to do is import your flight plan. Then:
- Select “Edit” next a waypoint. A window should appear in the bottom right.
- There should be an “Add Hold” option. Then you will see something like this:
You can choose the hold size, the entry heading (this can be a bit fiddly so it can take a few goes to get it right) and how many holds you want to do around that waypoint.
Oh okayy
So that gives anything to work automated or we have to manually hold those patterns?
Thank you so much for this
Had no idea such thing exists
The holding patterns that ATC can give - the heading changes have to be flown manually I’m afraid.
How do you import the file? I’m trying to work my way around this as well.
The least “faff” way to do it imo is to use the “Get Flightplan from Live Server” - so spawn in, file your flight plan etc… then go onto that site, search for your username/callsign and it should “grab” your flightplan.
From there you can edit it however you like, adding holds etc… then download it as a .fpl file to somewhere on your device. Then you can import that plan into Infinite Flight.
I’m on this stage but it’s not “grabbing” my flight plan.
Click on “Get Flightplan from Live Server” - make sure the correct server is selected.
Then enter your Infinite Flight Username (you could also change it to search by “Callsign”). Your name should appear, then press “Get Flight Plan”
If it’s still not working, reply with some screenshots so I can get a visual reference of what you’re doing.
Here’s what I’m at right now @BennyBoy_Alpha.
Click on the down arrow - does anything appear?
Nope nothing appeared.
Have you tried searching by your callsign?
Yep, same thing happened.
Ah I see what’s happening - you need to select the server “Expert (legacy 24.4)”. The ones without that are the new servers coming in 25.1.
I enjoy long hauls and usually import flight plans using SimBrief. Is the arc and hold function useful for long hauls, or is importing from SimBrief sufficient?
