How Much Reserve Fuel For Flights?

I was wondering how much reserve file I should do for my 14:37 minute flight? Please let me know, thank you!

Hi there,

If I’m doing a long haul, I will typically put in an hour more of reserve fuel and round up to the nearest 15 minutes.

If my flight was 14 hours and 37 minutes long, I would put in 15 hours and 45 minutes fuel.

For any flight, I follow the FAA-standard IFR rule for fuel. That means I pack enough fuel to:

  • get to my destination
  • get to my alternate airport if I can’t land at my destination
  • an extra 45 minutes of flying time on top of all that
