How far away from an airport do you have to be to contact tower? And the altitude.
its usually 25nm out and below 10000ft
How about approach?
75nm out and below 18000ft
Okay, thank you!
No problem!
on expert, be sure to tune into ATIS when 75-80 miles out
Hi Jordan! Here is the map when to send on guard :)
Estimated IF ATC Communication Range
50 nm is when you should contact.
Didnt know that thanks!
@TAI. MaxAsks: Where did you get the “Guard” graphic from. It’s inaccurate. It should be titled “Estimated IF ATC Communication. Range”. Why you ask, here’s why:
The aircraft emergency frequency (also known as GUARD ) is a frequency used on the aircraft band reserved for emergency communications for aircraft in distress. The frequencies are 121.5 MHz for civilian, also known as International Air Distress (IAD) or VHF Guard, and 243.0 MHz for military use, also known as Military Air Distress (MAD) or UHF Guard. Earlier emergency locator transmitters used the guard frequencies to transmit, but an additional frequency of 406 MHz is used by more modern ELTs.”<< (Source: WIKI)
So where’s ya find the inaccurate graphic?

Hi @Maxmustang. I got it from Air Traffic Control manual. Sorry, I didn’t know that. Thank you for pointing out.
