Whenever I’m at cruise, I have to guesstimate when to start descending, but whenever I watch a grade 4 or 5 they always descend perfectly. What should I be doing?

From NM.NM away from destination times 3

Welcome to the forum! Have a read of the tutorials section to help you out! Also remember to have a search for topics before asking a question as this is a topic that has been discussed many times.
So I brought for you a new tutorial,
on How to descent (For Begginers) in a simple way
here are the steps for descending:-
1. Imagine I am descending to land at TNCM Rwy 10, (I recommend to use TNCM, because it’s easy, approx. on the sea level) and my ALT is 20000ft, you need to multiply the altitude by 3 (I recommend to multiply it by 3.5 (For better experience)), then divide it by 1000
So 20000×3.5=70000÷1000=70NM out of the Destination
Do your all calculations before takingoff
2. When d…

You may also want to check out this one. Its similar to what @David_Lockwood replied but its a different thread.
Hi There,
there is an easy thumb rule for descents, that is important to know for pilots and ATC Controllers as well:
subtract the current altitude from the target altitude, eg
30000ft - 10000ft = 20000
divide the result by 1000 and multiply with 3 and you will get the miles
20000 : 10000 = 20 x 3 = 60 miles
so you have to start the descent 60 miles away from the point where you plan to be at 10000
IMPORTANT:
descent rate is no less than 2000ft/min
speed is not higher than 280kts til 10…

Could you reword that? This is a question that I am also looking for an answer for.
Simpler, 15’000ft* = 50 nm
25’000 = 80 nm
34’000 = 110 nm
*same for 16’000ft for exemple
With a 1800ft/min decent at 250 kts airspeed

When altitude × 3 = distance - 5, I descend at ground speed × 5, e.g 15,000 × 3 = 45, then + 5 as a buffer, and 300GS × 5 is 1500FPM. Simple

Or you can use this app here which has a descent calculator in it .

This new topic is approved by @schyllberg to avoid confusion, the past 2 topic are now obsolete.
Hello everyone,
Today, I’d like to introduce VirtualHub to everyone. This was previosly VirtualHub Premium which was a paid app, now free.
I’ll start off with the new UI. Self-explanatory, but overall it’s a way more simple and clean UI than the previous one. The weather page UI was also changed slightly to make it look better.
Some UK STAR charts we’re already added a couple of days ago…
( Sorry for self advertising :) )
