Seconds to Disaster - Close Call at the Persian Gulf
On October 31st, a flydubai Boeing 737-8 from Yerevan narrowly avoided a collision with an Air India Boeing 777-300ER bound for Mumbai near the coastline of Dubai. The two aircraft reportedly came within less than 2 nautical miles of each other, and shocking photos taken by passengers aboard the flydubai flight quickly went viral on Instagram. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident.

So, how did we get here? The following account is based on reports from the flydubai pilots and several passengers on board.

October 31st, 2025

On October 31st, flydubai flight 718 (FDB718/FZ718) departed Yerevan Zvartnots International Airport (UDYZ/EVN) bound for Dubai International Airport (OMDB/DXB) with 132 passengers and 7 crew members on board. The flight was operated by an 8-year-old Boeing 737-8 aircraft, A6-MAX.

Most passengers were part of the Armenian diaspora connecting to other Emirates flights in Dubai, along with several Emirati, Indian, British, and Australian travelers. This flight was supposed to be a routine flight for the pilots and was expected to take around 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Around 08:00 UTC, the aircraft departed Runway 08 at Zvartnots Airport, climbing steadily to its cruising altitude of FL370 (37,000 ft). The flight proceeded uneventfully until the descent into Dubai.

At approximately 10:10 UTC, the aircraft began its approach. After contacting Dubai Arrivals, the pilots were cleared to descend to 8,000 ft, joining the right downwind leg for Runway 30L. Little did the passengers and the pilot know that their uneventful flight would take a turn for the worse.

At 10:19 UTC, a sudden TCAS warning blared in the cockpit. Both pilots, momentarily confused, looked up to see an Air India Boeing 777-300ER climbing directly toward their flight. The 777 had just departed Runway 30R and was ascending at approximately 3,800 ft/min at 250 knots indicated airspeed. The flydubai pilots were caught off guard as they had been running through their landing checklist when the alert sounded.

They were about to inform air traffic control of an evasive maneuver when Dubai ATC instructed them to turn right immediately to avoid the oncoming aircraft. The timely directive, along with an earlier order to increase speed, helped the flydubai crew avert a potential disaster.

Meanwhile in the passenger cabin, the approaching Air India jet was clearly visible to passengers sitting on the right side of the plane. Panic spread quickly; passengers screamed as the two aircraft closed in. One passenger seated in 26F managed to capture a dramatic photo of the near miss.

The remainder of the flight proceeded without incident, and FZ718 landed safely on Runway 30L at 10:33 UTC. Both pilots and several passengers were still shaken by what had happened. The captain reportedly paused for a moment of silence after parking at a remote stand near Terminal 2, before filing a report with flydubai’s operations team.

The passenger in seat 26F later posted her photo and a detailed caption recounting the experience on Instagram. The post quickly went viral, drawing widespread media attention. In response, the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA) has launched a formal investigation into the incident.

By the time this thread is written, the investigation remains ongoing, and the final conclusions are yet to be released.

Hey, I couldn’t find anything online on this, so if you post like a fake report, please mention that it was fake. But otherwise nice “report”

Yes it is a fake one (based on my experience earlier today haha). I’ll add a disclaimer at my original post to avoid confusion. Thanks for the feedback!

Nice fictional report. Normally I don’t fully read big topics like this but this one was an exception.

If this was real life imagine the amount of comments I would see on platforms like TikTok saying: “of course it’s Air India”.

ofc its boeing🤓

Thanks! I thought it would be a good idea to create a topic like this (especially after reading several fictional accidents in the Virtual Aviation Accidents Wiki, and also reading the following topic

Indeed, people are so quick to point fingers nowadays, often based on stereotypes (looking at you, armchair investigators).

It’s even more funny when you consider that both aircrafts involved are (coincidentally), manufactured by Boeing.

that’s the point😆 and ofc “if its boeing ,I’m not going”

I already knew when I read this as the SID and STAR procedures are well established and have alt constraints and ofc we are talking about busy airspace with some of the most sophisticated flight tools they are using so it’s near impossible for anything like this to occur but that being said there was an tcas incident regarding Emirates and ethiad aircrafts in Mumbai airspace I believe.

Correct, if the Air India plane did not climb that steeply, I’m quite certain the close call would not have happened.

Right, Unfortunately people have no clue what they are doing in dxb and I have seen even fairly realistic players also following sim brief unrestricted climb for their sid making you higher and potentially causing on collisions with arrivals or just end uper higher on star following the simbrief procedures. Would definitely recommend everyone to observe flight radar and see how it’s done also to make things easier you can follow the in-game sid procedures since their alt constraints are correctly given. I will also share the latest procedures in case anyone interested.

  1. R30L/R Departures

  1. R30L/R Arrivals

  1. R12L/R Departures

Is simbrief all we have? It must difficult to create a flight planner for infinite because we have very capable talented people in the community, for sure something would of been created.

Those charts give me a headache lol

THIS happends with me in the end of August during ATC event (i was cleared to land)

no comments…

I haven’t found anything remotely close to simbrief functionality when it comes to flight planning for IFR. Also I bloody forgot to switch on the light mode lol maybe I can share them if you want.

Lol noo your ok. I mean in general, charts give me headache

I gotta say approach controllers who wish to control dxb definitely need to learn how to sequence aircrafts and how it should be done by taking a look at the procedures and flight radar. I don’t know why you have to fly the whole downwind leg that’s simply inefficient and that also indicates poor traffic management. Also the aircraft on runway doesn’t makse sense to me lol.

Yeah I understand that but if you want simplicity you can use chart overlay feature of Navigraph but kind of useless for IF though.

It’s S&V why would it be real :sob: that’s like seeing a spotting topic about a crash and saying “it didn’t happen in IF so please put a disclaimer saying it’s real”

He was given permission to cross 30L after I was cleared to land. I heard this and hoped he understood the situation and that he would wait until I landed (I was already on final). But unfortunately, 80% of players lack critical thinking or are always in a hurry (taxiing speed 35 knots, etc.). Because of this, the remaining 20% of players who are trying to immerse themselves in realism suffer. I spent another 25 minutes on all the procedures before finally landing. My EK94 flight from BLQ to DXB, which was scheduled for 5:20 in normal conditions, lasted almost 6 hours! But our friend on 77W calmly took off for SFO, and if he had just waited a MINUTE, all this could have been avoided. But in such situations, I always defer to these guys because I’m not sure they can react (ik there is a ton of text here, but this is just a cry from the heart:sob::sob:).

P.S. I wasn’t trying to insult anyone, etc. I understand that this isn’t vatsim, but these are literally the SIMPLEST THINGS, and if the players understood this together, the positive experience of both sides would increase exponentially.
