Heathrow is Undoubtably Britain’s busiest airport.
But how did it start?
Heathrow officially opened for commercial flights on the 31st May 1946, the original plan was for Heathrow to be a wartime base, but after the war ended in 1945, the plan changed for it to be an international airport.
As it was originally going to be a RAF base, it’s runways were in a triangle layout, this has obviously now changed to parallel.
The first foreign aircraft to land there was a Panair Lockheed 049 Constellation, on the 16th April 1946.
In the early 1950s, three more runways were completed creating a rough hexagonal shape.
In 1966, the name of this airport changed from London airport to Heathrow.
Since then, Terminals 1,2,3,4,5 have been built to accommodate for Heathrow’s huge annual passenger count, however in 2015, terminal 1 was closed to allow terminal 2s development.
