Not sure if i am using it correctly but whenever i turn on the vnav mode and then turn it off to choose my vs and then turn it back on again, my aircaft nose will suddenly point up a few degrees before pointing back down to the required vs. Is this normal or am i doing something wrong here?
The VNAV mode automatically selects your VS according to how far the point or destination is and how much you need to descend. You only have to put the altitudes for the selected points and VNAV will do the rest and bring you to the altitude at that exact point so you do not have to worry.
Hi, if you mean you turn off VNAV for the purpose of adjusting the VS that VNAV will use when you turn it back on again, that won’t have any effect on VNAV.
AS @Avean mentioned, VNAV controls VS, your decent rate so that you end up at the right height for the distance that you have to travel, given your speed.
This is implied by the name VNAV, or vertical navigation as opposed to LNAV, lateral navigation.
In short, while LNAV manages your motion through horizontal space, VNAV manages your motion through vertical space.
VNAV controlling (overriding your setting for) VS is how it manages your movement through the vertical dimension.
