Help. 787 stalls prior to touchdow?


I’m struggling to land the 787-10. With speed set at 145-150, full flaps, the plane just stalls within the last minute before touchdow. I’ve crashed twice @ EHAM today. I’ve never experienced this issue with other aircraft.

Any ideas/tips on what I’m doing wrong?

How high do you pitch

Try to keep a higher speed. You might be stalling due to your weight.

Try a little less than max landing weight, and for me it works 145kts IAS, flaps 30, trim in 30 and when I get the 30 feet call, idle and flare

I’ve been landing the 787-10 full flaps between 160-170 with higher weights, no issues at all, extremely smooth and responsive.

Thanks for all the tips guys. I might try some solo flights and see if I can work out what aspect of my approach needs modifying to deal with the 787’s different handling.

That should be your speed for your touchdown, if you approach at this speed, you would already be putting your plane on a flare. Any higher pitch. you will surely stall, which is what I suppose you have been doing.

Good point. It seems with other aircraft I’ve been OK doing the last minute or so of my approach @ 145-150 - all the way to touch down. Seems this is too slow for the 787 as my solo test flights @ 170 have now solved the issue, with the 145-150 just prior to touchdown. Cheers

I don’t seem to have the same problem? Make sure the weight and balance doesn’t show MLW, use full flaps and practice a little more. I think it’s probably just a matter of practice. You’ll get it don’t put too much pressure on yourself. If I can do, anybody can. :)

The -10 is a beast and very tricky. It looks like you have your airspeed way too low. Remember, the -10 is a bigger bird than the -8 and is heavier so you will need to increase the speed. Try this:

  • Set your weight to MLW (Max Landing Weight)
  • Recalibrate just to make sure its calibrated correctly. If youre weight was different and you adjusted the weight and dont recalibrate, you will be in for a fun ride lol.
  • Start of on the approach around 165 - 175 and then very slowly, start reducing your speed. You should target your approach speed around 155-160 touching down around 150 ish. This is with Flaps 30.
  • Make sure that spoilers are armed and not set to flight.
  • Nose pitch should be around 2º-2,5º

Practice this with the autoland first where all you need to do is control the speed. Then, start practicing without the autoland. This will give you a good foundation to work with.

I landed safely with 200knots - 210knots…

Speaking of being overweight, how come whenever I start flying, the plane is always overweight? I must always manually set it.

Also, why is medium weight overweight? That doesn’t quite make sense.

Well, if you ask me, I would said that its just follow the real world plane… So try set it to light and see whether it can solve your issue or not?

I do, but I have to do it every flight manually and it just gets annoying.
