Today, March 14th, is Pi Day π! For the unaware, Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference (distance around) to its diameter (distance across). It doesn’t matter the size of the circle - the ratio is always the same, about 3.14… Pi is an infinite number, but for your math homework, using 3.14 is standard.
Pi was “discovered” by Ancient Babylonians and later improved upon by the Egyptians. In this photo, we’re flying the approach to Al Najaf, Iraq, which is in the center of the Ancient Babylonian empire.
Fun fact of the day: The sum to infinity of the series of reciprocals of the squares of all natural numbers is equal to π²/6. This fact may also be used to estimate the probability that two random integers, 1 and n (n > 1) are coprime - where the limit of said probability as n approaches infinity is 6/π².
