in this case who have to give way to the other? Does it matter that im (american 458 heavy) is using the bigger plane or does he got to give away since im closer to runway 8R in miami (KMIA)
Jokes aside, which server did this take place in and was the airport controlled by a controller?
Expert server and yes there was a controller but the controller didnt do anything in this case
Generally I would just hold position to let them pass and contact ATC. Personally speaking in these cases I always let them have priority as it keeps things streamlined, but it should be in the order that the ATC directs.
Okay i see, but in this case i was actually ahead of that plane so idk…
Depends on who arrives first really, I’d say treat it like a Four Way Intersection but these are airplanes and not cars.
Yep, thats the thing. Thanks for taking your time to answer
Eh. Not really.
When two aircraft are on a converging course, the one with the other on its right is the give-way aircraft. The exception to this is if an aircraft is exiting an active runway.
In @Flightnico’s scenario, assuming United is not coming off the runway, they should give way to American.
What the hell did my CFI teach me then?
Okay so united was supposed to hold position? And i was not in the wrong but united? Both was taking off from runway 8R
Yes United was supposed to hold position…
so size of the planes doesnt matter in any case?
Might remember wrong but i kinda remember seing somewhere that smaller planes should give away to the bigger planes, kinda makes sense to bc why would a a380 stop for a 737-800
💀
Equally as curious. Right-of-way is a fundamental principle that applies not just in aviation but in every form of transportation. At the very least, I hope you learned right-of-way in the air in uncontrolled airspace. If not, I’d look for a new flight school and/or instructor.
I left flight school to become an EMT, probably a good idea that I did then.
So, it’s like cars on a highway having right of way over cars that are merging into it? 🤷♂️
Unless you’re British.
As far as I know, in the air, smaller aircraft are to give way to larger aircraft. Not entirely sure if that principle applies on the ground, though. I only fly at airports with similar-sized aircraft, so it’d be best to confirm with a pilot with a higher type rating or one who has the guts to taxi their Cessna at a commercial field.
From a legal standpoint, that is correct. If you occupy a lane that does not merge, there is no obligation to alter your course to allow a vehicle to merge.
Well all in all i was in the right and not united🤷🏼♂️
Haha, funniest part is, with my CFI, I remember there was a plane exiting the rwy so I thought the plane exiting had right of way, but he told me to go ahead and that the plane would hold on the runway (or it was just past the runway HS line, that would make a lot more sense, but I feel like I remember it holding on the runway before the HS line though I could be wrong). But that might’ve been because there was only one straight taxiway on that exit, so he might’ve converged head on with us if he was going the opposite direction, though I’m not sure tbh.
