During the 1990s, Garuda Indonesia aimed to position itself as a prominent global airline. Among its most ambitious ventures was a transpacific route connecting Bali to Los Angeles, served by the McDonnell Douglas MD‑11 under the designation GA800.
The journey commenced in Denpasar (WADD), Garuda’s gateway to Indonesia’s premier tourist destination. From there, flights made a technical stop at Biak (WABB), a secluded island in Papua that held strategic importance for long‑range operations.
After crossing the Pacific, the MD‑11 landed in Honolulu (PHNL), an essential stop for refueling and crew rest, before proceeding to Los Angeles (KLAX)—Garuda’s primary U.S. destination, catering to both leisure travelers and the Indonesian diaspora.
This route symbolized Garuda’s ambition to bridge Southeast Asia with North America. The MD‑11, with its tri‑jet design and extended range, was the aircraft chosen to carry that vision. However, the service was short-lived; the 1998 Asian financial crisis forced Garuda to scale back its international network, and the trans-Pacific flights were discontinued.
