Fun in Freetown!
Welcome to Freetown! As the vibrant capital and key port city of Sierra Leone, Freetown is the hub for most of the country’s booming industry in platinum, gold, diamonds, and oil, as it has one of the world’s largest deepwater ports. Freetown is one of the most important cities on Africa’s west coast, despite Sierra Leone’s status as one of the continent’s poorest nations. Despite the country’s rocky past and less than ideal reputation, Sierra Leone is becoming an emerging tourist destination, offering beautiful beaches, ripe for development.
Hungry visitors can indulge in some of the country’s culinary staples, like fufu, a dish made from fermented cassava tubers that are cooked and pounded into a pulp. Sierra Leone is an emerging destination for those looking to see chimpanzees in the wild, which one can do less than 45 minutes south of Freetown.
Until 1949, Waterloo Airfield was the airport serving Freetown, then under British control. Due to its proximity to hills and high rates of crashes, the British government decided to build a new airport in the township of Lugi, on the northeast side of the Tagrin Bay from Freetown. Despite the fact that it’s only 8 miles between the Freetown Airport and Downtown Freetown, it requires an hour and a half of driving plus a 20 minute ferry ride to reach the airport from the city, or a 3 hour drive all the way into East Sierra Leone and back around. There are plans to build a bridge to cut transport times, but construction is stalled due to the country’s crushing debt.
Currently, Freetown has service across Western Africa and to Istanbul, London, and Brussels in Europe and the Middle East. Sierra Leone currently doesn’t have a national airline, but that’s going to change in December of 2024, when Air Sierra Leone launches with service to London - Gatwick.
