Forum for learning or condemning: Community Members Too Snobby?

Anyone else feel that too many members of the IF community are on the verge of being excessively snobby and judgmental online? I have been a member on here for about a month and love learning new things about both aviation and the IF app, but too often am frustrated and chased away by comments by the same “big shots” who enjoy their reigns as the “unofficial moderators” for everything within the online community.

I would like to be able to ask questions online without the fear of being harassed by members who are all too happy to share their unending knowledge in a cocky and arrogant way. I’m getting tired of watching members ask honest questions and being told that “they should be more versed in their aviation history”.

I’m not trying to call anyone out, just reminding everyone that at some point, all of us were new and all of us are students. (no matter what our XP or flight log says)

Keep flying, keep learning.

Good point Joshua, I always try to keep my cool and remember that I once had no clue how to do anything! We all gotta learn somehow!

There are a lot of people like that around here. Stay away from them. If you see trouble go the other way. On the other hand there are also a lot of experienced people on here that are willing to help in a kind manner:)

Eh actually, maybe not a lot, but there are some. And that “some” make themselves known

  • Simply agree with all the words said by Joshua. I felt like some of us doesnt have the freedom of speech to talk things out for certain topics. Indeed at times we dont even know that the topic that we would like to bring forward has already been discussed way back. It’s irrelavant when they start to pinned down or flag or threaten our post by saying “I dont want this thread will be closed because of you!” by a Regular. When actually i was just suggesting something. I think EVERYONE here should be treated fairly regardless where we are from and the level of player we are from. Just get that into the mind. No offence to the Regulars. What i said applies to all. Thanks. Pffft. -,-

This is why you have the search button. The reason we do not like duplicate topics is that it makes the forum disorganized. If you have input or want to suggest a new topic please search beforehand. If it is already a topic you are welcomed to leave your input on that thread. Thanks:)

My only reason for visiting the forums is to welcome and help out new members. Unfortunately, most new posts by new members are locked and they aretold to search, effectively taking away that community spirit.
What’s left is a whole lot of repetitive nothingness that does not interest me.

Again, this is because the forum should stay organized. The forum would not be a good source of information if we had 5 different topics for the same thing. New users can show all their spirit on already existing threads. It just simply would not make sense to create many duplicate threads:)

I belong to an automotive forum with 121,000 members and in three years I have never seen anybody’s question closed and told to search. Everybody is treated with respect.

How would this forum be a good source of information if we had 10 threads for the same thing? All of the information would be scattered and no one would know where to start.

If you feel harassed by any member, regardless of their trust level or community status, don’t hesitate to flag their post. Moderators will take action accordingly on a case-by-case basis.

Oooohhhhhh, I have the edge of naming such people, but don’t want to cause a fight

Lol. It is understandable that we search for an existing thread before posting

but I saw a case where someone bumped an old thread, and then told by a mod not to bump old threads; saying “you can’t constantly bump threads just because of your own interest”

can’t post new, can’t bump old…

hypocrites much?

totally agree with you

yep either allowed to open a new post or (better) be able to add comments to an old one with out being told off for bumping a topic!

As a slight aside, again similar to other forums I belong too, how about a thread in general where new members can introduce themselves and say hi!

If you’re going to bump posts, at least add something descriptive. “Bump (filler)” makes it obvious that you’re just bumping for no other reason other than your interest of that feature being posted. If you add some sentences expanding on the feature or explaining how it could work, that’s totally fine. We just don’t want posts spam-bumped.

You are free to add your input to any existing thread:)
