Flying with Center question

Hello IFC,

Was just wondering if you are about to begin your descend to your destination airport, and you don’t have a full star, so you cannot “request descend via”. What should I do in this case? Is it “Request altitude change” or “request approach”?

But I thought “check-in” is only for climb to cruise, and any other altitude changes must be requested?

Aircraft with a filed STAR should Check In on initial contact with Center. If you don’t have a STAR, you should initiate contact by requesting your desired service or approach for your destination airport.

You need to request altitude changes. If you’d like to descend and are not on a STAR, request altitude change to the new altitude you’d like.
