Flying to Maho Beach- Part Two: KEWR-TNCM

BACKSTORY: My family and I decided to take a trip from Halifax, Canada down to sunny Saint Maarten, in the Caribbean. Our trip will take two flights, one from Halifax to Newark, then another down to the island. Additionally, we will be traveling around the Caribbean, including to the island of Saba, notorious for its extremely short runway.

Flight Info

Server: Solo

Aircraft & Livery: United Airlines Boeing 737-900

Origin and Destination: Newark, New Jersey - Saint Maarten, Caribbean

Flight Time: 3 hour, 46 minutes

During our layover, we picked up some lunch, walked around the terminal, and ran into some friends from Michigan. Time passed quickly, and we found our gate.

The 737-900 had just landed in from Houston/Intercontinental, and the ground crew immediately began making preparations for its next flight, ours, down to TNCM.

The plane was stifling as we boarded, and the AC wasn’t turned on until we pushed and the engines were started. It was a newly refurbished plane, with comfy seating an personal IFE screens. We were supposed to have Wi-Fi for purchase, but it wasn’t working on this flight.

It was a pretty light load, about half full, and we rocketed off runway 4L, then made an immediate turn to head down towards the Caribbean.

By the time we reached FL370, the plane felt like a party already. Everyone was celebrating the start of their vacation, and the flight attendants began the drink service, laughing and joking all the while.

We passed Puerto Rico, then made our approach into Saint Maarten. Things got kind of bumpy as we got lowed to the water, but nobody seemed to mind.

After a few twists and turns, we roared over Maho Beach, then bumped onto the runway. It wasn’t too smooth, but OK enough. The reverse thrust roared, and we made a U turn on the concrete to head into the apron.

Once we parked at the gate, we entered the steamy terminal via a jetway. We cleared imigtraions and headed to the resort! Tomorrow, we’ll be day tripping on Saba.

While waiting for the resort shuttle, I noticed a picture of our plane over Maho Beach, posted by a local spotter! It looked like we just barely cleared the perimeter fence!
