BACKSTORY: My family and I decided to take a trip from Halifax, Canada down to sunny Saint Maarten, in the Caribbean. Our trip will take two flights, one from Halifax to Newark, then another down to the island. Additionally, we will be traveling around the Caribbean, including to the island of Saba, notorious for its extremely short runway.

Server: Solo
Aircraft & Livery: Air Canada E175
Origin and Destination: Halifax, Canada - Newark, New Jersey
Flight Time: 1 hour, 16 minutes
Our flight left Halifax at 9:10 AM, so we arrived to the airport just before 7:00. The Air Canada E175 taking us to Newark today arrived in after a flight from Montreal, and I got this picture as it pulled onto the stand. Knowing there wouldn’t be much in terms of food on this flight, we sat down for some breakfast at the airport.
After boarding and pushing back right on time, we taxied over to runway 23 for our takeoff. We booked an exit row for our flight, so we had plenty of leg room for this hop down the coast.
We climbed up to FL320, where the flight attendants rushed through a speedy drink service. I opted for a hot coffee, making it my third cup of the day. It was pretty smooth up here, so the captain turned off the seatbelt sign almost immediately.
We cruised over the ocean for a while, following the coast of Maine. The plane passed over Boston, then began our initial approach into Newark Liberty International Airport. Things got a little bumpy, but it didn’t really matter as we were close to landing.
We did some banking around to line up with Runway 4R. I caught this picture as we turned on final.
Another passenger caught this picture as we began to flare for our landing.
We absolutely buttered, albeit the landing was a bit early, but the pilot applied only light braking, as the E175 doesn’t require much runway at all. Besides, our gate was at the very far end of the terminal, so the farther we could get on the runway, the better.
After parking, we breezed through US Customs and Immigrations, then moved over to the United terminal for our next flight. We have about 3 hours to kill, but we decided to stake out our gate first.
