In March 2020, Philippine Airlines—through PAL Express—attempted to compete with Cebu Pacific in Pagadian, launching the MNL - PAG - MNL route operated by Airbus A320-200s. During the pandemic and post-pandemic, however, Pagadianons remained loyal to 5J. PAL Express struggled to make the route profitable due to low passenger demand, transitioning from Airbus A320 jet to a Bombardier Dash-8 Q400 as passengers are more attracted to the “low cost” model and familiarity of Cebu Pacific Air.
Ultimately, PAL terminated the Pagadian services on January 14, 2025.
