Flight following, VFR, radar vectors how to know what to use

So I’m still seeing a ton of this and it drives me nuts.
So here is your tutorial on how to use each of these.
-VFR. This is used when you have a General aviation call sign are under FL180 and don’t have a flight plan, and it’s VMC.

-Flight following. This is used when you have a General aviation call sign, are under FL180 and have a flight plan, and it’s VMC.

-Radar vectors. If you don’t fit the category for any of the above ask for radar vectors. And obviously if it’s IMC.

That is all.

What is IMC?I usually always wonder when contact app ask for radar vector, is that right?

What if I wanna follow my FPL instead of getting vectors? Do I just request altitude changes?

Some of our ATC brethren would do well to read this too.

Yea you can just request radar vectors to approach if they need to give you an ILS or GPS they can switch it. IMC is instrument metorocical conditions. VMC is visual metorocical conditions.

You can ask for vectors and if you are able to follow your flight plan then they won’t give vectors just request altitude. Or just check in and request altitude
