Flaps open

One question: when do I have to open/close the flaps on departure/approach?

Depends on your speed.

For departure when you pushback you open them and and close them once you are above 200kts for approach you do it flap by flap depends on you airspeed at least this is how i do it…

Thank you guys! :)

This may help too

For example, On a flight from KLAX - VHHH on a B777-200F, you would start you decent, and after you pass 6000 feet, then you would start putting in flaps. Once you are at landing speed, you should be at full flaps. Don’t go from 1 degree to 15 degrees though. Add in flaps gradually.

Hey there! First of all the term should be up/down or retracted, not on/off ,:)

Secondly, yes we do use flap for departure and approach. Based on your weight and aircraft type you should set your flaps. For departure it shouldn’t be full or more since you’ll blow up with speed increasing and you’ll need a little drag to get you airborne. For approach, you should use flaps corresponding to your speed and weight amd aircraft type. During approach usually we full flaps are used for final approach but many do not prefer it,for which winds can be the reason, the ones who don’t use full flaps have different approach speed, they prefer to land at higher speed so they use flaps with their speed. As per my knowledge, BA SOPs says to not use full flaps in 747s unless a reasonable condition. Someone may correct me. That’s preety reasonable coz a 747 can grease it by coming at bit higher approach speed.

Hope it helps!

Good tips above already.

I think the trick is, for each aircraft, is to monitor how far the aircraft is leaning back (I’m sure there a better aviation word for it). When slowing down towards your landing speed, you’ll see your aircraft leaning backwards more and more, add some flaps and watch your aircraft becomeing more straight again. Then when you slow down further and the aircraft begins to lean back again, add more flaps. Do this until you reach your desired landing speed.

Hope this makes sense

I think the word you are looking for is “Pitching”

Not true. On taxi to runway you open them when you are clear to line up and wait at the latest or once you are clear to taxi at the earliest

I dont think so planes open them right after pushback or yes when they are ready to taxi…

No. When i flew out of kmem to KIAH I was in a swa 738m and they did it at the runway

Every airlines have different rules of conduct in their SOP, some do’s when taxiing,on runways, when pushback or some do even on gates. Every airlines conducts its operation i different way.

In true aeronautical grammatical accuracy l think the proper terms are to raise and lower the flaps not open and close them !

I do it depending on my speed and height it takes a while to get used to but it’s worth it because flaps are needed to butter the bread upon landing
