So I’m flying from SEA-LHR right now, and I’m at 35,000 ft MSL, but it feels kinda low to the ground. This also seemed to be the case on my recent flight from JFK-DXB, at 33,000. Does anyone else have this “issue” or know if this is just an illusion?
What’s your AGL? It could be that area is a few thousand feet above sea level
At the time of the photo it was about 32000 AGL.
I suspect it’s simply nothing more than an illusion, especially considering the camera angle.
Lots of land underneath us when we fly, believe it or not
There’s no standardized reference for scale in natural terrain scenery, unless you see something related to biology which tends to have scale rules (human structures have meaningful size relative to the size of humans, trees are fairly limited in how high they can grow).
But for geological features such as mountain ranges, rivers and coastlines, scale could be anything, like some branch, basically, of a recursive fractal pattern. This might be cracks in the ground I’m walking over:
Until I zoom out:
Thank you, Matt, for such an informative post.
