Farewell, Pretty Bird | Munich, May 19, 2020

Hey guys,

a quick addition to yesterdays topic today. Actually a very sad topic after all.
Sad for two reasons: little traffic making even Lufthansa’s CRJ a motive worth spotting…

…and since two of Lufthansa’s A340-600s left for storage at Teruel. Hoever, at first it looked like it might only be one 340 - D-AIHL stayed at the runway threshold for several minutes first, then taxied back to the ramp creating a last runway exit shot at its home base (with bad light however).

A few minutes later and with slightly better light, D-AIHT left Munich for real.

I have some very special memories to this plane since it was the one that brought be to Berlin and back two years ago, which was my last travel on an A340…

About an hour after the first attempt, -HL also left for Spain. Not knowing if I’ll go for another spotting session next Tuesday and whether the A340 will ever return from storage, it made me quite sad that this might have been my final glimpse on a Lufthansa A340 ever. With the departure of HL and HT, only two A340s (HU and HV) remain at Munich but they will also leave for TEV on Tuesday.

A little additional highlight came from Dubai: While I already completed my collection of EXPO A380s, I was still lacking EXPO 777s, so the blue triple was a welcome guest for me.

Things you don’t see that often: even the police was spotting the arrival of this bird.

Usually a normal movement but (if you look at it closely) a special one: Lufthansa’s A350 arrving from Beijing while being packed with freight instead of passengers:

And since the low traffic makes it hard to reach 10 pics, here’s a little Cessna Citation departing. It actually wasn’t the only Cessna at the field though, since quite some GA planes visited the airport for low passes over the active, yet empty, runway.

I accidentally hit Ctrl+Enter making the IFC posting it automatically so I had to rush the captions in the edit haha

That actually was the exact music I started to play when -HT started the bank towards the south 😥

What’s that? Sorry I’m a noob, lol

The registration in abbreviated form. The regs of all LH Airbuses start with D-AI so when you are talking about LH planes we often just use the last two letters

Woah amazing photos! I actually had plans to the A340 from Charlotte. It’s so sad they’re possibly getting retired. Don’t know if I’ll ever get an opportunity to fly my favorite plane and check out LH’s special bathroom configuration.

Technically, only 7 340s are said to be phased out. From what I’ve heard it’s very unlikely any 340-600s will return though.

On another note, the 777 has gone missing from the maintenance hangar.
