Extend Downwind versus I'll Call Your Base

It takes time and practice. Over time you learn what works best for you while still providing excellent service for the pilots.

Regarding over-controlling, you want to let your sequencing be your instructions regarding separation in most situations.

We all know TS is a whole different animal, but you donā€™t want to fall into negative training habits based on TS traffic; control up to the level of Expert rather than down to the level of TS, if that makes sense. You should work toward using these commands very sparingly, letting the sequence be the pilotsā€™ guide as to when to turn base, etc.

There are just a few scenarios where you may need to use them, like those listed above, or trying to get a pattern guy in front of a full stop entering final.

If you find yourself telling a majority of your pilots to turn base or telling them youā€™ll call their base, youā€™re over-controlling.

You have to trust your pilots to manage their separation based on their sequence. Granted, there will be times when they wonā€™t, but they can always be sent around to figure it out.

A lot of times flying on TS, I receive a lot of Turn Base commands when Iā€™m well above the glidescope and thereā€™s no one on final sequenced behind me. Or maintain slowest practical when Iā€™m on downwind abeam the field. These are entirely superfluous commands and over-controlling.

Sequence your pilots appropriately, and use these commands sparingly.

Thank you! I think I tend to overcontroll sometimes, because I donā€™t expect people to separate enoughā€¦ I just made too many bad experiences on TS1.
Canā€™t wait to be IFATC

This is exactly what I mean by negative training. We all know about TS, so there will always be pilots just doing their thing.

But as you practice, make sure you donā€™t fall into the trap of controlling for TS.; controlling for pilots who wonā€™t maintain separation or listen.

You want to practice how you intend to control in a more controlled environment. So, try to stay away from those over-controlling commands.

I know what you mean and it makes total senseā€¦ I will treat people like experts on TS1 from now on and just see how it goesā€¦
But I think I got a lot better with overcontrolling lately
