Extend downwind ill call base

Hello i need some guidance on the above topic.

I was flying my flight plan and I was told by the controller to extend down wind ? Can someone please explain what I need to do to execute this command. I didn’t do anything thing other than follow my set plan and was then told to follow instructions???

Hello! Welcome back to the forum.

Basically what this means is that you should just continue flying the downwind leg parallel to the runway until you are told to “turn base”.

Therefore, the thing to do is turn off LNAV and keep flying on the heading you are currently on.

You continue flying against the runway, then ATC will call you to turn left/right depending on the traffic pattern.

Hi BennyBoy

Hope your ok ?

I did turn off LNAV and VNAV and just kept on course but then was told to follow instructions hmmm.. so disconnect as didn’t want to get a violation.

I’m slightly confused now - you said you followed your flight plan. When you’re told to “extend downwind” - it effectively disregards any flight plan you have and you keep flying on the downwind heading until the controller tells you to turn base.

Yeah I was flying my plan down to Heathrow arriving from north to RW27L and about 1 o’clock to airport at 6000ft decending to 5000ft then all this happend with extend down wind…. So I turned off Lnav and Vnav…

Ok - if you want to get more clarification, I would reach out to the controller to get their perspective on it.

You can find the controller’s name in the replay → States tab → COM1 metric.

No worries

Thanks for guidance.

checking out the user guide for pattern work might help you with that too, and also getting familiar with traffic patterns

Thank you.

I just dont know what commands to say at the appropriate time for example: left downwind or right downwind in respect to where I am in the vicinity of the airport.

left or right (insert traffic position here) simply means you’re on base/downwind/crosswind and direction refers to the direction of the traffic pattern. If you’re making left turns then it’s left downwind (runway to your left) but if you’re making right turns then it would be right downwind (runway to your right). hope that makes sense. if not, the user guide has more detail

oh about that left and right, it’s even easier
if you’re flying downwind, and the airport is to your right, that means you’re in right downwind and you’ll always be turning right. And same goes for every leg in the pattern, like left or right base

as always, there’s all about it in the user guide

I will have a look and look on YouTube for videos.

Thanks for all your help!

I saw your post about disliking to pause to calibrate because it ruins the realism. Maybe knowing basic pattern instructions is bigger priority than button configuration if your striving for realism

There’s lots of things in this game that needs fixed. I assure you I am back to basics and learning ! Every day is a school day. When im paying a subscription for a game I expect it to be up to a certain standard and many many subscribers are complaining also at the lack of improvements. I dont expect it to be Microsoft standard obviously but there’s alot that could be fix but isn’t… im sure its WIP… one can only wait and see.

I couldnt agree more

‘Extend Downwind’ means to continue flying straight on the downwind with the same heading without following your flight plan until further instructions from the controller. This is usually done to maintain proper spacing between aircraft.

Since you mentioned that you were following commands but still received ‘Follow Instructions’ from the controller, it would be best to directly message the controller on Discord or IFC for clarification. With time, you’ll gain more experience and it will all become clearer.

Dear @DANNY_ROMAN
The 4 Traffic Pattern Sectors are Crosswind, Downwind, Base, and then Final. Extend your downwind means fly opposite heading of the runway you want to land on. Extend Downwind means to extend it out likely to assist with Wake Turbulence or to allow a bigger aircraft or a smaller aircraft more time and runway length with their landings and arrivals. When the Air Traffic Controller is ready to “Call your base” that means they will then say Turn Base (Example: N927AP Turn Right Base). This means just that and means turn base aka 90 degrees from the runway heading
