Etiquette Question

If I’m on the training server and am told to contact tower, what do I request/do if I’m flying above 5000 and I’m simply flying over a VOR near the airport requesting tower contact? I wasn’t in the 5+5 but I also didn’t want to ignore ATC.

Is your final destination the airport that is on guarding you?

I don’t think so? I was flying over PANC on my way to PAIN, 120nm to the north.

Did you have a FPL?

Yes.

If it helps:

When random TS controllers erroneously contact me, I’ll give them a stand-by, finish what I’m doing, then send them a thank you, g’day.

In the new controllers defense, he probably just didn’t click on you to see your final destination. Which is unfortunate, had he clicked he may not have on guarded. Also, expert controllers even, sometimes, accidentally click on guard as it’s close to other info.

Just hypothetically, if you didn’t have a FPL and you were flying at 5000ft AGL directly over the airport, I’d on guard you as Tower. So you had one which is good.

I’d just tune in and then ask for a frequency change or ignore, there is not much you can do in that situation as that person is learning.

Good to know. I definitely want to honor anyone trying to learn and want to make sure I handle it right as well. Thanks!

If they say “I’m sorry” then you know they clicked that by accident.

Unrelated, looks like there’s no elevation data this far north sadly.

Does this mean you weren’t within 5nm and below 5000ft of the airport?

That is correct.

Just don’t tune and request a freq change on expert…

You were probably the only aircraft within his view.

Although, not a reason to on guard of course.

If you go North of 60 degrees, there is no elevation yet. Sorry to go off topic, back on track.
