Enroute Alternate and Contingency Fuel

Hi all.
I was just planning a flight with Simbrief and thought of something. I know that if you have an enroute alternate, you can reduce the contingency fuel from 5%/15min to 3%/15min. My question is though, when is it realistic to have an enroute alternate? Is there a specific situation where that would be needed?

To clarify, I’m talking about an enroute alternate, not a destination alternate. They are different things.

I believe all IRL flights have a set alternate, but when you make that call, I’m not exactly sure. I’d rather go to the alternate and end up having extra fuel over run out of fuel and crash.

Technically you always file an alternate in case of weather or any other situation on a IFR plan. It’s up to you really what your alternate can be. Just be sure it’s capable of handling your aircraft and within range.

I trust it’s 5% or 45 min flight. It’s also what SimBrief says in the tutorial section I believe.
