Engine Response Delay

The Engine Response Delay feature changes how aircraft engines react to throttle input by introducing a realistic time-based build-up instead of instant power changes.

In the current system, moving the throttle immediately changes thrust. With this feature, the engine behaves more like a real turbofan system, where internal components must spool up before producing full thrust. When the pilot increases throttle, fuel flow rises first, but fan speed and core speed take time to catch up. This creates a short delay between input and actual aircraft acceleration.

Different aircraft respond differently. Smaller aircraft react quickly with only a slight delay, while large jets take longer because their engines have more rotational mass. This means a light aircraft will feel responsive and sharp, while a heavy airliner will feel slower and more deliberate.

During takeoff, pilots would need to advance thrust earlier before releasing brakes, because waiting too long reduces takeoff performance. During go-arounds, power does not appear instantly, so timing becomes more important. On landing, reducing thrust does not immediately remove forward energy, so flare planning becomes more realistic.

The system does not add complexity to controls, only timing. Throttle still works the same way, but the aircraft reacts with natural delay based on engine physics rather than instant simulation.

This feature improves realism by forcing anticipation instead of reaction. It rewards proper timing and planning without changing core gameplay mechanics, making every phase of flight feel more connected to real aircraft behavior.

This is something we need in IF, especially if we get classic jets where the spool up time is multiple seconds.

Imagine this on something like a Boeing 777.

Right now in Infinite Flight, when you push the throttle forward, you instantly hear full engine power. But in real life, the 777’s engines don’t sound like that at all.

At idle, the engines are quiet and low. Then when thrust is applied, you first hear a deep, slow build-up, almost like a rising hum. The fan starts spinning faster, the core catches up, and only after a few seconds do you get that full, powerful roar.

  • You push throttle → sound starts low
  • Then it builds up gradually
  • Finally reaches full power after a short delay

So instead of instant noise, you’d actually feel the aircraft coming alive.

This would make takeoffs in the 777 way more realistic, especially when holding brakes and applying thrust before release. You’d hear the engines slowly rising, not jumping straight to max.

It’s a small change, but it would completely change how heavy aircraft feel and sound in the sim.

Of course it’d be great to have this aiming for realism but in today’s context, I don’t think this is very necessary. I see this feature as a long term must, when the sim reach a certain level of realism, this will for sure be needed!
